I don’t think it’s that bad but I don’t think it’s great, production is crazy though. Just maybe disappointing considering what we’re used to recieving.

I feel like he’s done these types of sounds better before (Blinding Lights, Can’t Feel My Face, I Feel It Coming, In Your Eyes) and they’re all hits, a lot of this comes across as a MJ impersonation whereas he had those songs scattered around on more versatile projects which had elements of this sound, R&B, pop, and dark music which blended nicely.

I just feel like someone as talented as him, why feel the need to try and go off other people’s sounds (MJ & 80s lane) when he is so good at being original or putting his Abel spin on s***. I get why he’s doing it, but it comes at the cost of losing (some) core fans but at the same time he will be even bigger.

But ya those are my honest thoughts before someone calls me out for my username😈

The recency bias argument is so flawed. So upon first reaction, people are allowed to say a new piece of art is worse than the preceding piece, but not allowed to say that it’s better?

If someone’s immediate reaction to an artist’s new album is that they like it more than the artist’s previous work, why is that a problem?

You can even flip the recency bias argument on its head and say some people are only saying Dawn is worse than AH because it’s newer and they haven’t had time to live with it.

Both arguments are stupid. Let people’s immediate reaction be valid, whether it’s positive or negative.

If this is your favorite project you’ve heard from Weeknd after your first listen, then you’re completely valid in believing that. If the opposite is true, then that’s also valid.

    U right, with a caveat:

If someone wasn’t a fan of After Hours but likes Dawn FM more, I understand

But if you were singing the praises for After Hours the last 2 years and automatically declare Dawn FM better after only a day? Naa, that’s sus

ultimately, the only reason you guys are putting this bizarre argument forward is because you weren't there at the time

BBTM was like a bullet in the skull for reams of people

Dawn FM ain't doing anything on that magnitude to anyone

    you're just wrong

Na that’s not what I’m saying. BBTM was his first time going pop. Lot of artists try to go pop after they get a buzz off mixtapes, most fail miserably their first time and fade into obscurity. He proved he could dip into that bag effortlessly on songs like can’t feel my face and the hills without compromising his sound

I think I knew what you meant and I agree with everything you said here. I just wanted to highlight that few artists can do or has done what he doing atm.

He is just creatively on another level.

At some point reaching these heights and creating at this level will probably cause a reaction in form of an album or project in the future that might be really left-field to kind of reset himself creatively, that could be hit or miss for some people. It could also set up the next thing. We will see.

In terms of songs individually (not considering cohesion), this is his worst body of work imo

But why though? I love After Hours, but after my first couple listens of Dawn, I had a more enjoyable experience overall than I ever did with AH.

Again, why is it valid if I loved AH and hated Dawn on first listen if you could just make the argument that I haven’t had time to let it grow on me yet? It’s the same concept.

Kiss Land was a flop and any fan expecting him to drop more of the same after that was selfish

He was destined to make pop music after covering Dirty Diana. it was gonna happen sooner or later. he tried it with Kiss Land, great album but didn't get him to the level he wanted so did what he wanted to do after that.
