It was polarizing as a project but the general public loved the hits and they were just as big if not bigger than the songs that came before it, mbdtf was the slam dunk for Kanye’s career and solidified him as hip hops best creative.

Tyler has yet to reach those mainstream highs when it comes to the music and you’re probably right it may not happen but he’s still so young. I truly believe he has it in him to become “the guy” he just has to get some outside help and live a bit more

Wait the hits on 808s were bigger than the ones on Graduation? 🧐🧐

We can acknowledge that Tyler is a legend but he hasn’t made the big leap and might never will (which is ok)

Once he finds his trusted executive producer the industry might be in trouble tho

and again I ask.. with songs like Earfquake, WusYaName, Sticky etc do you have to know the story to enjoy those songs

No you don’t and this is a testament to the fact that he is a good artist

However these aren’t transcendent, universal hits on the level of his contemporaries

Like I would genuinely argue that none of these songs are as big or pervasive as PTL by Rocky

I’m doubtful but I’m rooting for him

Tyler doesn’t strike me as the type to compromise on what he likes on any level and I get that. His artistry is a very personal form of expression for him

I think he probably sees nothing broken so why fix it especially at the expense of what he’s been doing for forever

Honestly I’d be shocked and wholeheartedly impressed if he decided to address it and improve

  • Dec 25, 2024

He can and I hope he does, he’s his own biggest problem all he needs is a solid team to help out instead of being so independent with his ideas and product

He’s gotten much better the last two albums and his storytelling has improved a ton. I think a lot of it boils down to him not experiencing much real life s***, he and his music are very immature (cmiygl & chromakopia you can tell he’s finally opening up and living a bit). He’s just now starting to talk about real relationships, mistakes and problems relatable to someone his age.

He gained a cult following at 17 and got rich at 19 and from what he says and shows he kept to himself and didn’t do too much mingling/living and it seems his growth was stunted from being a recluse of sorts, also he was focused on business and building his brand (which is extremely admirable and he has undeniably succeeded in doing). Each album has its fair share of personal content but it’s presented in such a childish way it gets hard to listen to repeatedly, at least for me. His last two projects he’s gotten much more relatable and has matured a ton and I think he’s finally opening up to different experiences which will only benefit him in the long run.

Overall he’s just a nerdy, edgy introverted extrovert and it’s been wonderful watching his journey, I truly believe he will die one of the most important figures of our time and he’s got a long way to go.

Lastly, I do think it’s hard to deny that he gets majority of his love through his personality and work ethic and not the product itself. Everyone listens to his work when it first drops, he’s got tons of acclaim and has done some incredible things with his music, his music just doesn’t really have the most legs. Flowerboy and Igor are both massive albums and he continues to sell tons of records within the first few weeks of his drops on everything post those records, his place in the conversation is undeniable I just hope he continues to grow and make more palatable music in the future

Well put he’s still super young with room to grow so gonna be interesting to see where he goes next

I truly believe if Igor had a different narrative and more guests it could’ve been an all time record, easily his best produced work. The writing and delivery are so immature/bad though it drags it down heavily

Bro like songs like F***in Problems are staples in culture real “where were you at when this dropped?” type s***

Tyler has gotten close to the top without records like that and tbh that’s pretty impressive in and of itself nigga loves the grind

Bro Earfquake is 5x platinum compared to PTL's 4x platinum.

They are neck and neck I'd say especially for the type of songs they are, wouldn't you?

They’re comparative but I’d still give the cultural edge to PTL

FWIW it has more streams (1.4M vs 1.1M) and out streams it daily despite being older

Also PTL MV has 500m more views

I also got a question though.

Outside of Tyler, are records like that wholly necessary to get close to the top like that anymore?

Like Carti is one of the most buzzed about artists in 2024 and he only dropped like one single officially and s***, it's weird

  • Dec 25, 2024

Igor is probably his most narrative driven album. Almost all love songs or referring to a romantic prospect, the only song that doesn’t follow the concept is what’s good. If anything cherry bomb and chromakopia are his loosest albums in terms of concept/narrative

Edit: I just reread your post and yeah I wish it didn’t have a concept and was different songs over those beats, only song i wouldn’t change is Igor’s theme

No because streaming changed the landscape entirely and most of our biggest artists today are part of that era even if they debuted before

I am of the belief that cultural footprint will never be outdone by numbers though so whether or not you have “that hit” you still absolutely need it

Plus I’m willing to bet Carti’s late 2023-early 2024 run will be remembered fondly IF and only IF his album is good

Like the fact that an album like GKMC was able to pull off several hits while sticking to the concept

I’m not sure if this speaks more of Kendrick or less of Tyler but I’m leaning towards the latter

I think both. Like you said somewhere earlier itt Tyler seems like somebody who's difficult when it comes to getting to compromise on his vision and Kendrick is someone who has a lot of creative freedom but knows how to make a hit when needed

Carti album bout to be phenomenal tbh

Depends on if he’s willing to sacrifice cohesion to satisfy his ravenous fans (myself included)

This is the most important album of his career but I don’t see Carti having enough to say or having super varied and concise production to keep me interested for a 18+ tracks and this has been my most anticipated album for awhile

It has to hang in the rafters with DS2, Astroworld, etc. anything less is a failure

Carti if you’re reading this save yourself the trouble and do a double disc if anything

I’m expecting the album to be extremely versatile and the most rapping & singing he’s done yet. His loosies were some of the best songs of the year and a ton of his features went crazy. I doubt he’s gonna get very personal outside of a love song or two but he be saying some fly catchy s*** that makes you feel good. He’s on some s*** and it’s gonna be a good album I’ve got no doubt about it
