Yeah. I think people have overcorrected a bit when it comes to legitimizing the south's impact on hip hop, to the point where we let anything fly. Thats part of what led to the 2016 class being able to do what they did.

On top of that, any criticism on the region as a whole is still met with that automatic knee jerk reaction of "yall just hate the south", or "nobody wanna hear that other s***". i think its sad when genre fans talk down on aspects of that genre being technically appealing to people

there are musicians out there in other genres that love the musician that at some point made it look easy to them, so much so that they got into the craft and later realized how secretly difficult it is to do what their favorites do. if the stuff gets more people into the arts and crafts of it then why is it negative impact, the natural process of 'weeding out' will do what needs to be done anyways

I don’t think it’s fair to blame the lyrical decline in hip-hop on the South because it ignores the fact that the South has produced good MCs.

Lil Wayne is a good MC and one of the most influential rappers ever on the mic — even Kendrick has talked about his influence. Rick Ross is a good MC; he may not be a Jadakiss, but he can hold his own on the mic, as shown by his many Nas features.

Juicy J and DJ Paul pioneered an entire subgenre, and that aesthetic and sound remain influential in hip-hop today across all regions, even reaching places like Russia.

So no, I don’t think the South is to blame. I think the popularity and growth of hip-hop, making it more consumable to an audience outside of the culture, is what caused this.

the main thing that killed hiphop was letting new listeners who started listening to hiphop in the mid to late 2010s, like many users on this website, start having their voice taken seriously AND those same people talking confidently to longtime hiphop listeners because they think they understand a lifetime of being raised on hiphop off just starting being a listener halfway through their lives. instead of saying “hey bro, break it down for me” it’s “I promise I know more than you” real nerd lame s*** that kills the point of the culture and actually learning it from people who were raised within it every single day lmao

I haven’t had the chance to watch but all I wanted to say thus far is not all lyrical miracle s*** makes a good song and you don’t need to be heavily lyrically inclined to make good music. I know it’s a broader discussion at hand but I do know that as someone who loves when rappers just bar out over a beat it’s like the ethos of hip hop but I don’t think it’s entirely fair to box artists in 100% of the way. I think effort and growth is really what you’d like to see from the newer gen at least in my eyes

I think it’s more about the barrier of entry thing than a location thing. Get a hot beat and go with simple s*** that people have heard 100x over since it’s proven to be successful. Honestly imo demographics matter less than they ever have these days because the regional sound doesn’t really exist like it did before

South ruined hip hop. Should've stayed in NY-WC. No midwest, no north, no Canada, no south. Influence and impact they've had on everything from music, to education, has been downright horrendous.

Worst thing is the fans are still lining up for another album of Future slop, Young Thug, Carti, 21, Lil Baby, Drake, Travis etc... those guys remind me of the "Frat Pack" comedy guys that ran movies in the 2000s and now are mostly seen as outdated losers. Only difference is rap fans don't got nobody else to turn to--so they're still at the top of the mainstream 15-20 years later
