  • This was good but not great. And a material like The Sopranos deserves greatness.

I think there are two main problems.

I don’t like how it’s directed. It looks like the first film of a guy who just got out of film school and is still very much influenced by Scorsese and de Palma. It reminded me of the pilot. It felt uninspired, derivative. Too many tracking shots, constant music, flat color grading… The Sopranos was praised for its style, the stillness, the quiet, strange moments of contemplation which gave the show a mystical atmosphere. I think Chase wanted something more cinematic but it missed the distinct artistic identity of the show.

Another problem is the writing. So many great ideas but the fact that the film is only two hours long doesn’t allow Chase to explore the depth of these concepts. The show was great because the format of a TV show allowed the writer to dig within the psyches of the characters. Even side characters like Paulie had a lot of depth. The film gave us rough sketches but we’re left with the desire to see the final piece. Problem is, this is the final piece.

I think it should have been a miniseries. As I said in another post, Chase is working two projects, we can only hope that he’s willing to tell us more about Tony’s past.

I have 30 min left to go. Outside of name familiarity of the characters, and some mildly interesting tie backs to the series, this s*** is pretty disappointing.

Hopefully something actually formidable happens here.

Did the last 30 turn it around for you?

One thing positive I will say that’s not really a spoiler but I’ll put spoilers on it. Hopefully I don’t f*** it up it was a neat little homage to have Chris narrate the movie because his character was passionate about making a movie, so I thought that was a cool aspect. kind of like he’s fulfilling his dream from beyond the grave.

  • Seeing this tonight in the theaters.

Whoever played Silvio did a horrible job I thought people were exaggerating with the early watches but it’s borderline cringe inducing

The age gap between tony and silvio bothers me im okay with p\*\*\*\* and tony age gap tho also it says on Christopher‘s tombstone he was born in 1969 yet he’s a baby in 1974?

I do think David Chase has redeemed himself when writing black characters much better then what was on the show

really stunned with how unnecessary this was. as a stand alone movie, it’s ok I suppose. But tying back to the sopranos, it’s actually really bad. None of the clever dialogue or humor from the sopranos is really there. The characters are all just flat charicature versions of themselves compared to the series. You really learn nothing new about the characters. The closest they come to doing a good job with matching a character is the Paulie bits. James Gandolfini’s son is solid but they didn’t do much with him…even though the heart of the show is Tony Soprano with all due respect to D\*\*\*ie Moltasanti. His character just wasn’t that great or interesting to deserve such a deep dive in this movie. Also Chris alludes in the series that his dad was a junkie, but here he’s this man’s man of mobsters.

Then you have new characters like the black empowerment story line which just feels pretty forced and doesn’t really bring anything to the table for what the sopranos was.

Tony has a bond with D\*\*\*ie that they want us to pick up on, but the moments shown in the movie between them aren’t memorable and don’t give any emotional gravity to anything.

Tony’s transformation from civilian to mob is very badly executed. No Tony B really unless I missed it. No robbing Feech’s card game. Etc.

We actually learn more about the black guy who rises up, which is good in theory, but in a sopranos prequel, feels very out of place and you have to ask yourself what’s the point? Maybe it’s bc, the sopranos series was racist, but i always took that as more to be a realistic view of how these mobsters would be. When Jackie Jr. loses at chess to the little black girl in the series, it’s way more profound than this.

There’s a lot more I can touch on but pretty disappointed honestly.

I think I’m the only one not disappointed. I had middle ground expectations and it met that pretty much. Wasn’t amazingly breathtaking good, wasn’t a stinker. I definitely don’t see myself rewatching this too much if at all. But I enjoyed watching

    Damn.. y’all don’t f*** with this?

    Watching it tonight.

Keep in mind from music to movies and tv ktt doesn’t f*** with anything really. Take in half of what you read when gauging consensus and that’s about the accuracy. Also this is Sopranos so the standard for this to be good is so high to the point it was doomed from the start lol

My favorite thing in the movie was so insignificant it doesn’t matter. I got hype seeing Patina Miller. She’s really on the come up

I wasn’t disappointed either, but I do agree with most of the criticisms. The marketing really f***ed it putting Tony at the forefront. I actually feel like whatever (might) come next will def appease more to what people wanted from this

Could've done more with Young Tony's character rather the card game, Tony B, further interactions with Jackie and Carmella, etc. than focusing strictly on D***ie, I get it but still we know what we came for

And yeah Young Silvio was just not good lol

Overall solid, like others said nothing fantastic but I enjoyed it

I hope they make more Sopranos movies or a spin-off show. Doesn’t even have to be about Tony or involve him. It would be cool to see a show based on Chris’s dad doing mafia s***.
