What is the point you're trying to make with the insistence that it was a surprise album? That it serves as a caveat and the sales expectations should be lowered?

No, but surprise albums always sell a little less than an album that actually gets rolled out

  • someone rlly should have told kendrick's team that surprise albums sell less

    would have been good info

  • shaleirose

No, but surprise albums always sell a little less than an album that actually gets rolled out

I guess there are levels to 'surprises' and 'rollouts' then. A surprise album that comes after years of silence (no music releases, interviews, etc.) from an artist is different from a surprise album that comes after beef victory / #1 single / print interview / music video / Super Bowl announcement

I would not have lowered my expectations for Kendrick's album sales coming off his 2024 just because he hadn't told us explicitly that he had an album about to drop

How? What I’m saying is that him not dropping in 2024 was a real possibility, since he could’ve dropped the weekend of the Super Bowl in 2025

You originally said that him dropping in 2024 was a foregone conclusion

I know what I said. And I still feel this way. I felt that way in 2024 after the beef when he didn’t reply to HP6. It was all smart marketing/strategy.

But even if he did go the route of your example, while the timing would be a surprise, there’s no way that Kendrick Lamar dropping an album less than a year removed from the beef should be a “surprise” or that it had no promotion. GNX definitely had promo. It was just indirect and probably one of the best marketing campaigns/strategies I’ve ever seen.

What I'm saying is that GNX, along with every other surprise album in the history of music, would've sold a little more first week if it was announced and rolled out beforehand

It didn't have promo, if it had promo the internet wouldn't have blown up when it released

It did have promo (indirectly). And that’s why the internet blew up when it was released.
