    Think a lot of people are just missing the fact that this stuff came on everybody’s tv or radio at the same time. You couldn’t just not know about Mos Def lol

    This is lowkey the biggest reason for all of the changes in rap music since 2010-2016

    Really even going back as far as 2007-2008 when YouTube started probably being people’s main form of visual media consumption over cable. I remember lowkey even not watching 106 like that after 08-09

    1. Hip-hop was a niche genre until the mid-90s when it started to have somgs regularly chart on the Billboard 100

    2. We had popular rappers chart on the Hot 100 from the late 80s to the mid-90s but they weren't recurring fixtures until mid90s to 2000s

    3. Having a song debut at (even) number 1 on the Hot 100 doesn't make you a household name, doing that consistently does. Is f***ing Roddy Rich a household name.

    i mean it did well for a hip hop track at the time but outside of the hip hop bubble he wasn't a household name.

    his 90s-2000's run transioning into acting and hip hop itself becoming bigger is what made him a household name.
