Yeah, mos def’s level of stardom really shows how they made sure to get that positive s*** out of here after that era

Even more conscious artists that are allowed in the mainstream make really negative music

Dude this is so weird I was just thinking last night about how Mos Def was so f***ing famous at one point while being extremely outspoken and radical in his music.

    Such an anomaly.

Like everybody loved Mos Def fr

    Different time fr

Like imagine f***in Armand Hammer or something being all in the movies and on TV rn 🤣

Armand hammer not a good comparison lol. I feel like that just further shows how far we’ve come from that time

It really wasn’t an anomaly back then. That was just what hip hop was. Artists with messages weren’t relegated to making obscure weirdo music

Mos really did remove himself from being a cultural darling. In music and very much so in Hollywood. I respect it because it was a genuine decision and one he’s stuck to as the years went along.

His next album after The New Danger, True Magic was randomly just released through Geffen after this on a random Thursday night with no announcement lol. Back then music dropped on Tuesday and there was no surprise drops not to be a dinosaur.

I distinctly remember because that’s when I was getting into his music. And my older cousin who worked at Best Buy just showed me it was out on shelves.

That’s a dope story. I remember seeing it on shelves and it was the first CD I ever saw with no booklet, it was weird

household name?? the level of popularity that term requires would absolutely mean selling more than 500K in 99/2000. Meth and Red Blackout went platinum and I’m not sure I would even call them “household” names

I’m not saying anything about the quality of Mos’ art. BOBS is a classic and he’s top 3 to me… he just wasn’t mainstream

Meth and Red Blackout went platinum and I’m not sure I would even call them “household” names

The duo that had enough legendary collabs with chemistry great enough to garnish an entire movie that became a cult classic aint a household name?

The nigga that Wu-Tang Clan themselves said they was planning to PUSH first as the breakout star of the group because of his star ability isn't a household name?

no disrespect but you saying Method Man and Redman weren't household names shows you don't really know what that means @smackdab

  • I think it's like only 6-7 (no pun intended) people itt that was like...very cognizant during Mos Def's prime to understand why he was definitely mainstream for the type of content that he was pushing

Nigga singlehandedly referenced motherfucking Fishbone, how many black rappers in the late 90s even knew who tf Fishbone was?

People like Mos Def being able to even have radio play (Sex, Love, & Money off the New Danger was definitely getting plays on the radio when I was living in Orlando with my moms at the time) is proof that a lot of current rappers that do push some unique ideals and sounds, if they had came out a decade earlier, would probably be highly more successful.

As long as you don’t talk about them, you are good

Spitting. They tryna erase and belittle how big some artists were as time passes. And Mos is one of the biggest examples. Some people will try to act like he was just some underground s***

folks really not aware that there used to be a time you didn't have to sell platinum to be a household name.

Especially when at a time internet wasn't the biggest form of communication versus word of mouth.

He definitely had a dedicated fated fanbase and got press but he wasn’t a big star. Vince Staples is probably a decent modern a***ogy in terms of level of celebrity.

This is who yall need to be directing yall energy at @Fredward @Garcon

@WRU is agreeing with yall (though I will say, the way you worded it syntax wise could have people confused)

Nah, some of y'all just have a very me-centric view of the world.

Hip-hop was an almost uniquely American thing until about 2002.
Even then, the only "household name" rappers before social media became a thing would probably be Pac, Nelly, Wu Tang Clan, Eminem.

  • Yo this was one of those albums I’ve always heard revered but took me so long to sit down and listen to and it’s one of my favorites. The energy on songs like this really captivate me. And joints like War, Grown man business, life is Real been like anthem for me this year
