The hard ass beats on that made me feel like it was a mixtape that just got put on streaming lol
Damn
I could def see Mos Def being way bigger if he leaned into being in that Kanye Pharrell Andre Lupe lane of eccentric mainstream rap dudes at the time / leaned into those relationships and collaborations
Wonder what happen for him to wanna change
from my understanding he had been acting before even getting started in rapping, probably was set financially and didnt want to play the game
Dude this is so weird I was just thinking last night about how Mos Def was so f***ing famous at one point while being extremely outspoken and radical in his music.
Such an anomaly.
Like everybody loved Mos Def fr
Different time fr
Like imagine f***in Armand Hammer or something being all in the movies and on TV rn 🤣
And he was on top of GOOD music at one point. It just didn't pan out like it was supposed to, but he was up there.

Very wrong. People knew knew Mos from Chappelle, Ye, The Italian Job, Hitchhikers guide, monsters ball…he was also like the face of conscious hip hop. Vince will prolly never be as recognized as Mos
You think im arguing that mos def was less popular than vince staples?
Mos a cool cat

Best Yasin story is that he was making money being in commercials before his rap career ever took off. Talib and other guys would just be in the park rapping, dead broke. Mos would come through and take them all to McDonalds. Man of the people.
Making music like this while being in Be Kind Rewind. Truly a 1-of-1 talent.

I GOT THAT THUGGIN LOVE
I’m nosey I always wanna know how niggas like him make bread lmfao
Not paying child support to the point you can’t get back into the country helps with expenses 🤣

That’s the wildest title for a song I ever read 😭😭
i thought him and the breakthrough of the Lyricist Lounge artists were a reaction to the Pac/Big deaths, aswell as the commercialisation of the genre in the 90s. It was all about bringing hip hop back to the anti-estabilishment forefront. Every decade seems to have that phase atp. 80s had Public Enemy and others.
We aint really seen much newer artists do that within this decade, so thats why older, mature artists are gaining relevance. Theres always an audience and market that people yearn for in the genre imo
He definitely had a dedicated fated fanbase and got press but he wasn’t a big star. Vince Staples is probably a decent modern a***ogy in terms of level of celebrity.

He was a really great actor, as someone else itt pointed out he was acting even before rapping. Back in the day Entertainment Weekly genuinely predicted him to be the next Tom Hanks which gives perspective to just how big of a deal he was in his prime and just how drastically different the content of his music was to anything you’d expect with his level of fame lol

His peak popularity is being overinflated ITT. BOBS didn’t go platinum…
I mean I don’t think he was ever a household name because he was never truly commercially viable (and didn’t set out to be). But he was everyone’s “if you know, you know” kinda star when he was active.

Niggas just LOVE hyperbole.
Not enough for him to be a great artist and actor, he has to be simultaneously the next Tom Hanks and Drake.

He was like Lupe before Lasers.

Nowhere did I say he actually was the next Tom Hanks lol I said he was a great actor and used an actual magazine article from 21 years ago where they predict his career trajectory to illustrate just how much hype was around him and his dual career. Thats not hyperbole that’s providing an example lol

I didn't mean any offense to you, but they were tripping.
Bey is a brilliant actor, but nothing about any of his roles suggest that sort of trajectory.
