Movie is decent for what it is, but not really a good adaptation of the book. Too much character development has been lost in all the dialogue and moments cut to fit the story into 2 hours. It got to the point that I really didn’t feel what I imagine I’m supposed to when more important characters inevitably bite the dust.
Olson and Stebbins are probably the biggest victims of this as two of the most important characters in the book. The movie reduces both of them to total blank slates and omits their arcs. They start with Olson and his jelly legs then he disappears from the movie until he’s brought back to be killed. Neither of their death scenes hit as hard as they should
Didn’t feel like McVries was well developed enough to justify him being the new winner, but to be fair I also couldn’t understand like 25% of his dialogue due to the poor sound mixing and the actor’s disastrous American accent that he couldn’t seem to stay in for more than 30 seconds at a time. Him killing the major was also stupid and killed some of the original ending’s subtlety
On the subject of the major Mark Hamill was way too over the top in this and it almost felt like he was from a different movie
It was ok. Read the book if you liked the movie it’s a lot better
Without having read the book I can agree with all of this. I just...didn't feel much.
wtf I didn’t realize that was Mark Hamill lmao. And how tf is David 10 years older than Cooper????????
because cooper is WHITE!
Idk I was sad when the asian homie died being he was the first out the musketeer friend group

Damn bro your heart done turned cold

great delivery on the i did it all wrong lines
What’s the original ending?
McVries dies third to last then Stebbins leaving Garraty as the winner. But Garraty has totally lost his mind by this point and the Major can’t even get him to stop walking or take his prize. Then he sees “a shadowy figure in the distance”, thinks the walk isn’t over, and finds the strength to run

These lines represent my core frustration with the movie. They’re lifted straight from the book (same with Stebbins rabbit thing) but in the movie they make no sense bc he hasn’t received enough character development

I've seen people say the same about the rabbit speech from Stebbins. I had no idea wtf the guy was talking about.

Word word I ended up looking it up, honestly think that ending would’ve been better

This would've easily been the most creative part of the entire film
I liked this a lot but the ending kind of fumbled. It should’ve ended a minute earlier and it would’ve hit so much harder

The walk is much more of a public spectacle in the book, with crowds who interact with the walkers. In Freeport the walkers are basically their own parade which made Garraty’s mom being the only person there in the movie a little ridiculous. One of the most jarring differences for sure

I was expecting pete to get lit up in slowmo like platoon, I was kinda confused why he didn’t get shot
I was thinking pete did get shot but we don’t see it and when he’s walking away in the dark that’s him dying.

Absolutely. That scene didn't work for me at all. Which is a shame, cause the most emotional part for me might be when his mom first drops him off.

yeah that would’ve been better and added to the more f\*\*\*ed up nature of the themes, like these kids are walking in a “parade” as a spectacle for all these people watching and celebrating

Amazing how badly they f***ed up this movie, no cap
Idk I was sad when the asian homie died being he was the first out the musketeer friend group
Loved asian homie, he was funny
Definitely the death that hit hardest
I just love Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson
They made this go down super easy
Predictable plotting, but still engaging the whole way due to the chemistry of the actors
