to be fair, i also despised abby up until the last 15 mins. it felt like they were trying to justify joel's death by making me empathise with her. i even let ellie kill abby a couple times in the theatre for the satisfaction of knowing ellie "wins"

the moment ellie threatened to kill lev if abby didnt fight her was kinda when i (began???) to empathise with abby (i still don't like her as much as ellie although my replay of the game is making her grow on me a lot). i definitely do think the game is about cycles and how becoming so consumed by the idea of revenge or has most of the characters see it, justice can lead irreversible consequences. but also during ellie's part of the game her justification for killing all of abby's friends is justice when its more so sadism masquerading as justice.

i'm not mad at the ending tbh. i think ellie made the right decision. i would've hated if she actually did kill abby, regardless of whether i liked her or not. i think the crux of what the game is attempting to communicate is how the cycles of violence can ruin someone and by ellie not killing abby, she stops the cycle. thats just my take on it. i don't think i articulated myself the way i wanted but i think with time i'll have a more articulate interpretation of the game

Let's not forget Joel used to rob and hurt people by luring them in and pretending to be hurt

Its very controversial to paint the main protagonist of part 1 as a bad person, but I meannnn from the Fireflies perspective...Joel was pretty s***ty. He single handedly ruined any hope of saving humanity

Ellie tortured Nora while she was getting infected even though she knew about what Joel did just to find Abby

I guess Ellie can do anything and still be the hero that deserved a happy ending because we were emotionally attached to her and her adopted mass murderer of a father that decided he wanted another daughter instead of saving humanity.

And Ellie was quite clearly shaken up and showed remorse afterwards while every time Abby did something awful she took gratification in it. But you still want to jerk her off

At the end of the day, we know Ellie would've been ok with dying for the cure.

Soooo Joel is justified by going on a murderous rampage through a hospital and killing doctors to save someone who wanted to humanity by any means necessary. Then killing Marlene who was Ellie's mother figure, then lying to Ellie and telling her that she actually isnt special

But the only group in the world who were trying to save humanity and attempt to fix things are the big bad guys?

Not to mention Abbys father seemed like he been studying this for a long time, I'd trust him with this...ALSO the fact that Ellie her self told Joel she'd rather be dead for a chance to find a cure.

I'm not telling you to empathize with Abby, but dont make it seem like Ellie is Jesus Christ that can't do nothing wrong just coz we loved her and Joel in the first game.

This is a whole new game, and her actions led to her demise in the end.

Bruh that's the point, no one is a saint in this world. Literally everyone has done vile acts , that is the only way to stay alive. But we can't act like Joel is hasnt done plenty of f***ed up s***, im sure even Joel would agree that he isnt a good person by any means

I'm not saying "fuck Joel" , but no one should be surprised that Joel's actions came back to haunt him in the end. Only reason why people see Joel's actions as "ok" is because he was the protagonist

I don’t see the ending as anything phenomenal tbh. I mainly just see it as the repercussions that Ellie has to deal with as a result of being so consumed by revenge. I’m pretty sure naughty dog intended for the ending to feel empty and for us to feel the same way Ellie does in that spot.

I will say this game is corny for pulling that Mel/Ellie angle considering how many shorties does Ellie kill without blinking that was most likely in early stages of pregnancy?
