DwindlingSunI've seen plenty of adaptations of novels/others games/plays that have still left an emotional imprint despite my awareness of the outcome.
Of course I'm saying there should have been more conflict than there has been. They haven't established that this is a violent, scary world effectively enough and that's why there's so little tension in encounters like this one.
Think about it: Joel taking on those raiders and getting impaled is the apex of danger that he will personally encounter in this season. And that was it??? No gunshots, no fear, no hiding about in the science lab, having to sneak through. In the game we would hear the enemy talking, calling us out, forming plans. In this, nothing.
We, as the audience, should be terrified of those raiders, we should be on the edge of our seat. I certainly wasn't. A pack of 4 guys with pipes turned up, one of them for some reason had strayed from his group, got his neck snapped in 2 seconds and had magically managed to shiv Joel. It was extremely anticlimactic. I didn't feel any tension whatsoever. I didn't really think of them as a credible threat once. I really don't feel much fear at all for Joel's survival. I didn't feel like Ellie really does. Her having to carry him out in the game was so significant and tense.
So far, if anything, Joel really is doing nothing to dispel the notion that he can't take care of Ellie effectively. He's barely had to fight anyone and when he does half the time they do seem to just get the jump on him out of nowhere. I'm not calling for him to be a superhuman am I. But he should feel tough and hardened and capable. I don't really feel that whatsoever because they've been so sparing with the violence.
While a lot of what’s bothering you arnt issues for me, this is a good example of intelligently criticizing something without just being on same lame arbitrary s***. Good post.

It has literally removed nothing that has made the game great
Not a single person thinks the gameplay and action in 1 is great. It was about the characters, dialogue, and drama. And always was. That is what this game and show is about. And they are f***ing nailing it

I HAVE ONLY POSTED IN THIS THREAD ONCE. I AM A BIG FAN OF THE GAMES. I THINK THE SHOW IS JUST OK. I AM NOT BLOWN AWAY BUT I AM ENJOYING IT ENOUGH TO KEEP TUNING IN. I WOULD LIKE MORE VIOLENCE, I BELIEVE IT TO BE A CRITICAL PART OF DEPICTING THE DANGEROUS NATURE OF THE WORLD THEY ARE NOW OCCUPYING. I ENJOYED BELLA RAMSEY'S PERFORMANCE THIS EPISODE. I THINK PEDRO PASCAL IS A FINE JOEL. HOWEVER, EVEN STILL, I FEEL LIKE SOME OF THE EMOTIONAL BEATS BETWEEN THEM FEEL RUSHED AND AREN'T QUITE MOVING ME AS I HAD HOPED, IN PARTICULAR THE CRITICAL DECISION JOEL MAKES TO GO WITH ELLIE.

but realistically, how is Joel supposed to survive this baseball bat injury? that man lost a ton of blood, horse rode, in the cold.

I definitely hope the next season is at least 10 episodes. 12 would be a really nice place to be but I doubt they’ll do that many.
While I’m pretty much just loving this so far, I think 2 more episodes on this season could’ve done wonders for added relationship depth and character progression.

i'm just looking for good tv man. again, i don't hate the show. i'm just bewildered at niggas foaming at the mouth for it. and are they only foaming because they're fans of the game? but they took a lot of the game out of the show? I JUST NEED HELP. HELP ME.
Let niggas foam at the mouth for something they never thought would be possible. Its not an action violence tv show. In the game it is action violence focused. Pedro Joel not killing more in the show does affect his ability to properly defend Ellie yet he still tries so there is that I guess. the lines they are recreating of the game are cool. But at the end of the day the game is a different experience and to some degrees a different story. You also have to realize they are trying to set up for season 2 and 3/ game 2 story when last of us 1 they didn't know all that.

I mean the journey has been much more empty wasteland than conflict of any kind . the time jumps a lot of them too eat away at a feeling of progression

the gaming story was never "realistic" to me so them teleporting it to a tv show they are making it "realistic" which kind of changes the whole story

It’s just a different medium. We spend so much more time building the relationship in the game. Time skips in a show are different idk

when you remove the gameplay parts or violence AND have the time skips that is why it feels rushed . I am not saying we needed constant action but rather than a swarm of large infected in episode 5 could have sprinkled them throughout the season better to create more intimate moments of tenseness.

Yeah there are definitely things that have felt rushed. I think my biggest criticism so far would be I would’ve liked to see Joel and Ellie bonding the way they did in the the last 20 minutes of this weeks episode a little sooner. And maybe not ON the level they are on at the end of this episode, just just a more gradual shift because I did feel like when they left Jackson a switch was flipped in their relationship.
We did get to see glimpses of it, like Joel panicking in the sniper spot to protect Ellie from the infected swarm, but some more “friendship” type dialogue would’ve helped I think
