Abby is never considered a protagonist. This is why the story eventually comes back to Ellie. Abby's arc is key in completing Ellie's.

Abby being a body builder goes along with her image as being a cold hardened killer among the WLF. She is meant to be brutal and heartless due to her traumatic past. I don't think we ever are supposed to see her as good person. Just someone who commits wrong acts to counter the wrong acts that have been dealt to her

I also hope ppl realize that in TLOU2 they try their best to make Abby the new Joel. She doesn't have his charisma but in turn she finds someone to take care of and protect. Lev is her Ellie which in turn changes the perspective of the ending.
Ellie than becomes the killer trying to take happiness away from Abby but unlike the ending of the first she not only forgives Joel for his decision of not giving her a choice but also forgives Abby.
