Bro do you even know who the Beatles are? John Lennon was literally assasinated and youre talking about the cultural impact of when MJ died
I know who the beatles are get out your feelings
I've heard of none of that and I had the Britpop thread on ktt1
I'll check them out
Are you British?
They got a bit of range so here's a few songs to check out. some are proper big radio songs and other are more lowkey:
Road Rage
Bulimic Beats (one of the only actual good songs i've heard about bulimia)
Mulder and Scully
International Velvet
Dead From the Waist Down
Why I Can't Stand One Night Stands
Strange Glue
Their album international velvet when 3x plat in the uk, which is hard to do over here. and it doesn't really compromise at all. the title track is legit welsh verses and then the chorus in the only bit in english and it's about thanking the lord you're welsh lol. Some of the songs can sound like simple love songs but are about pretty specific things underneath all that, which is something i think jarvis used to do too
The Tom Jones song is called Ballad of Tom Jones and it's by Space. it features cerys, catatonia's lead singer/lyricist tho.
MJ changed the face of pop music forever and had a stage presence and perfectionism we might never see again, but I'm gonna give it to the Beatles. No one has more hits, and yet if you listen to their discog, so many of their albums and tracks are them doing weird and experimental s***, things they must have known wouldnt ever be singles. Always just incredible to think how they could write eternal hits and then go back to the studio and record something like revolution.

Only in spirit and heritage and climate
we get so much rain in vancouver that Rays rain songs always helped me internally romanticize the s*** weather
part of the reason I stan so hard

yeah i just wondered if the heavy welsh accent on Catatonia will be a shock to your ears.
I think her voice is beautiful tho. she can do intimate vocals and really belter songs too
you should come uk after the pandemic

I've listened to loads of John Cale and some Manics so maybe maybe not

yeah i'm always down for people singing their accents.
i think cos in the uk there's been times where people have sung in fake american accents, so people appreciate it now that happens a lot less

Like every uk band in the 60s until Well Respected Man and Sunny Afternoon came out
Think there have been any worthy successors to the style Van Morrison crystallized? Too hard to begin to replicate I reckon

that's what i mean about ray's influence. really he's the godfather of that mid-200s boom where everyone was signing singers singing in real or fake cockney accents with loads of english references after Lily Allen blew up.
idk. i feel like Van being Irish is really important to his music. have you heard the album he did with the Chieftans in the 80s of irish songs called Irish Heartbeat? i love it. his vocals at the end of she moved through the fair are crazy
there's not really a proper successor. if i really had to think of anyone, then maybe the Waterboys. their frontman is Scottish, but some of them are Irish and they did cover van's sweet thing on one of their best albums. they've written pop standards too which young popstars in the uk cover still now and have had hits with. btw their music is very different from the one big us hit they had

yeah tbf they have some songs which are completely disconnected from how much they love folk music
i think Van loves that s*** but hides it better
Lennon solo is so garbage lol
number nine dream out now
Woman out now
Jealous guy out now
george harrison had the GOAT solo career tho imo

it's an amazing song. i love their lowkey songs i like that
i think she had some issues and they broke up after the album that's on, i'd have loved them to have carried on. she's done some solo work ik but i haven't checked out that much except some of the cool folk covers she did.
she now has a pretty popular sunday morning radio show in the UK. and she plays like pop music, jazz, world music, poetry, rock and loads of other s***. it's a cool show whenever i come across it

Isn't it a pity
all things must pass
he apparently played songs from that album in Beatles sessions and got rejected. imagine rejecting all things must pass

In their defense they also let him put mid s*** like Don't Bother Me on early albums and even gave him the opening track on Revolver
They would have had to have had another couple white albums to fit everybodys songs on Abbey Road and Let It Be

they all made mid songs over the years, but all things must pass would have a classic beatles song.
