I actually agree a lot with this, you changed my mind.
I thought it came across like a modern 1950/60s spy thriller when I saw it. It was just really a preference for me that I wanted it to have a deeper emotional aspect. But looking at it outside of that deep emotional element; it was so good. Honestly appreciate the movie a lot more now that you said that.

I appreciate the open mindness! But like I said I do get where you are coming from, it's hard not to draw lines to his previous movies and first impression do make one draw conclusions based on those comparisons like the whole first half of the movie really goes by fast and changes directions constantly but it's pretty satisfying and refreshing that it just doesn't hold back.

Movie is a 10/10 for its genre and a 7/10 for Nolan

I got the reveal about the protag being in charge the whole time

    I got the time mechanics

I got the cool twist that it was elizabeth dibeki who jumped off the boat and she saw her self. I actually found that really poignant when you think about how she talks about that moment and how upset it made her feel earlier in the movie

But I didn’t really get any of the set pieces besides the last one

Most times it wasn’t clear to me WHAT they were doing and what the objective was. And at the end of the set pieces, there was no clear thing they now know or now they have obtained.

Like most scenes felt like I was a foreign person watching people speak English but I didn’t understand English

Need a rewatch where I’m not a dumb person watching it and not understanding it

You summed up my thoughts about the set peices exactly. Mainly about the last one

It was an amazing fight scene but I felt nothing was really happening and the inversion wasn’t even having an impact

I know where your point is coming from but I personally feel like it's comparing apples to oranges. Fx take Intersellar, not only is it 18 minutes longer than Tenet but the pace itself is very slow and focused on the characters and the environment around them. Ad Astra is a better direct comparision even by ignoring the scifi/space connection to Intersellar.

This a espionage film and it fits that mole very good with it's own Nolan flair. From the first minute the movie starts, it's straight action and there's tons of it throughout the movie, which is spare in Memento/Intesellar, it's more respectively mystery and suspense. You have the classic multiple locations, car chases, watch etc. that is typical the spy movie genre.
I've felt that the audience wasn't suppose to identify with the protagonist, therefore the lack of a specific name.

However, I do know where you are coming from and a bit more dynamic between JDW and Kat would be great, the chemistry between RP and JDW were great imo. Just feel like this criticism in particular is kinda brought up a lot in reviews while completely ignoring how someone like James Bond isn't really known for his personality as much as his characteristics and antics. Same goes for that whole movie franchise, it just isn't that kind of movie and it shouldn't really count as a flaw unless it was purposely gunning for that.

    Damn this makes sense

This isn’t just an issue specific for Tenet. Apart from Cooper & Dom, a lot of Nolan’s character are quite cold and stripped down. It’s one of his major critiques. I personally don’t mind it however! If you’re going that route, there needs to be an understanding and a realization that the audience and character choices will part at some point since there’s no foundation in the relationship between the two.

In Tenet, that was the relationship between Protagonist & Kat. There wasn’t much to hang on to nor did I feel any bit of connection to their friendship. In fact, when they said she was dying I was hoping she would as she just kept on being a hinderance. Much like a Bond girl who’s there for a slice of the film.

There’s been characters in film that have been even more mysterious than Protagonist who have had the full support and love from audiences, it’s just if they connect & he didn’t for me in Tenet.

  • I have to see it again but this might be my favorite Nolan.
Two sentences said in the movie really transformed my vision. The first when the scientist says something like "You'll get the details later, you just got to feel it". From that point on, i was ok with letting go of knowledge logic and understanding, just to go deeper and appreciate the experience fully. Something i didnt get but i was ok with that. I feel like thats Nolan "trolling" our viewers habits. The explanation are confusing with a lot of music and sound. Its like he is oversaturating our brain so we finally let go.
Just watch inception or interstellar. If Nolan want you to understand something complicated, you will. Maybe he didnt want you to understand things fully.
The second sentence comes a few time in the movie even at the end when The Protagonist says something about we are still not processing time the right way.
What if Nolan gave us all those information and we have to let our brain doing the work at his own rythm not just during the movie but after.
Most of my friend told once you think about it its not that complicated. Just just got to let time do its work.

  • Like i said this is Nolan trolling us in an awesome way.
This is not just a spy movie. This is Nolan's Bond. The Protagonist with no background (Ian Flemming called his character James Bond because for him it was the dullest name ever) the over the top villain, the bond girl, the Q branch, the car chase with the car that can go backward, the world wide set, the clothes...everything scream James Bond. In Casino Royal, Bond had to kill to be a 00. Here the Protagonist had to die.
When i say Nolan trolling us. Look at that "heist" scene with the plane. In Casino Royale Bond had to stop a plane from exploding in an airport. In Tenet...
Still the plane Heist scene. They came to steal a drawing, they didnt get it. And they had to throw away the gold and the other painting. THE F*** KIND OF HEIST SCENE IS THAT WHEN YOU DONT STEAL S***🤣😂😂🤣😂
    Nolan be trolling.
So when i watch the movie, everybody was serious except Pattinson. Him and his character really felt like they had fun in this story. And stylishly Nolan is really close to that character Neil. So for me thats his way to show us that he is having fun creating those crazy ideas
