People saying this show is overrated or won’t be remembered are just wrong imo this is about as good as it gets from a writing and acting standpoint

It’s not action packed like breaking bad but there’s so much more depth and complexity under the surface compared to a show like that (and I love breaking bad and I’m not even saying this is better). It’s just an exercise in subtlety and character more than it is an exercise in plot and action

The acting is obviously phenomenal top to bottom but man the writing is just so f***ing cutting at times. I think this is the only piece of art to aptly deal with the 2016 election at least that I’ve seen. That’s not easy because a s***load have tried. Pieces like that scene with Kendall ripping Romans stitches out or Shivs arc or the power dynamic between Greg and Tom or Romans complexity is just so developed and poignant. And even though none of these characters are likable people and even though they’re mega rich, corporate execs so removed from any of our realities the writing still makes you feel and still makes you understand them and makes them relevant and meaningful just in shades of grey not black and white. I think I can think about this show for a long time and still grapple with what I felt about things and people and what it was saying about life a and wealth and capitalism because I don’t think it was just always some clear cut theme and that’s a rarity and a mark of a phenomenal show

Ken wasn’t right for the job clearly even within the shows arc

He f***ing killed someone lol
He consistently f***ed up, got power hungry, spiraled into manic-depressive episodes, etc

He only ever showed flashes - there’s a line in season 2 that paraphrasing says “he has all the tools but never can put them together at the right time”

That was Kendall’s whole arc he’s fundamentally unable to do that job despite feeling like he can. Even in this episode look at how his whole demeanor changes once he thinks he has it

He only operates effectively when he’s on the tightrope

I’m saying all of these pieces are not just that one

The power dynamic between Greg and Tom is fascinating to me

The way tom latches onto Greg from episode 1 after being s*** on by Logan as a way to feel powerful and then you see this develop into this weird almost friendship but also this power thing for Tom. And then there are times when Greg starts to break out of that and make moves for himself and you see how Tom reacts in those situations where he feels like he’s losing control - safe room, finale, etc. and in the end there’s every reason for Tom to boot Greg but he keeps him and there’s that lasting ambiguity as to whether Tom views Greg as a friend and one of the only things he has left at that point given where his relationship with Shiv has got to or whether it’s just a way for Tom to continue the power hierarchy he had with Greg before via Logan and now via Mattson

It’s one of the funniest bits on the show but there’s a lot to it and I’m sure there’s more to it when you factor in toms relationship with Shiv too given there are some big scenes between Greg and Tom revolving around that

I think some ppl struggle with this show because
A) very little plot development occurs - Logan is about to die in episode 1 and it takes till season 4. All the plot never really amounts to much - the two arcs of pure company plot are basically cruises and gojo
B) very little character development occurs. There are very very few pivotal pieces of character development - the vast majority of character development comes from the more minor characters like Greg and to a lesser degree Tom

The show is more like a character study. Plot becomes almost repetitious at times but you learn more and understand the characters at a deeper level through it and their actions and through that the show can be deep and make social commentary and etc
It feels like a fundamentally different thing to a show like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. Not even making an argument about which of those is better but I think they’re just fundamentally different things

There is no single best show

Succession is as good as the best, but there so many little things here that accumulate to make this the most entertaining watch out of any them. Everyone is as funny as Roger Sterling, and is as childish as Paulie, Christopher, Tony, Junior, etc; and the characters are as conniving and manipulative as Walt or Saul. The show paints the evil of capitalism as good as The Wire. Idk. It just does it all.
