Really good film, 10/10 imo. The dynamics and the context of the characters in that vs the ones in this show are almost 1-1, show's biggest inspiration for sure.
Murdoch's biography + Festen = Succession.

Even the filming style is 1-1. Both verite although Festen is much rougher and unpolished (by choice).

he mentioned another show called Dallas which also sounds pretty similar

yeah remember reading this interview a while back and looked up Dallas and saw it had hella seasons and episodes and I said I'm not not watching all dat lool

I don’t know if it’s a criticism of the show or just me being unhappy with how it played out but I just hate that the entire show is either hinting at or outright leading us to believe it’ll be Kendall only for it to definitively not be him

Like maybe that just makes it an extra effective tragedy but man that s*** was like as sad as The Fly for me ending-wise

EDIT: and it feels like this season they knew our hopes for Kendall were out the window so they really worked to raise them up with the moves he was making in Honeymoon States/Living+/Church and State. Like I really thought he was at least taking a semi-W

Ive actually oversimplified that equation there are a s*** ton of books/shows/films/real life events this show pulls from obviously. For me these two stand out tho.

Festen and the Murdoch media conglomerate in particular are the biggest ones and the ones Armstrong mentioned repeatedly when as far back as 2018/19.

I don't think Kendall was propped up as the protagonist past S1. Like an altruistic perfect protagonist we should all get behind. He's deeply flawed like everyone else. He has such an overzealousness about him and thinks he's the smartest person in the room when he's clearly not. He has a drive but it's misguided. Feel like the writers always made us aware of this.

It's just a matter of emotional investment really. I still think S1 is the funniest of them all.

hmm, i think watching the show w that perspective leaves the viewer setting themselves up for failure. i forget who said it itt, and i think he meant it as a criticism, but nothing really changed in the show. it was the same old s*** happening again, and again due to characters not being able to escape who they are. just more and more demonstrations about how s*** these people (rich people in general), and this system was -- the "wrong thing" always happens, regardless how undeserving, or illogical it seems.

its almost like this this show was more like watching Seinfeld in a way. same characters, but present them in a particular circumstance, and see the hijinks that ensues from them being them.

the tragedy is not what happened at the end to these characters, the tragedy is who they are, and have been the whole time.

It was a spiteful move lol but the thing is it doesn't matter why she really did it because she was right about Kendall. None of the Roy kids are serious people and they would f*** Waystar, butt heads with Mattson, who just needs someone like Tom: someone to execute plans without question.

on the subject of tom, can you imagine how f***ing pathetic you have to be for a man to s*** on the mother of your child, and tell you straight to your face with almost glee that he wants to f*** her and she does too, and you just stutter s*** back like "oh yeah, no no, i understand".

again, he began as this pathetic man willing to sell himself short of any sense of self dignity for money, and he grows throughout the show as recognizing what he is, and folding into it even more

Gotta love the irony of a show called succession that ends up with none of the kids having the top spot.

F***ing white people. All this wealth and social power. They get to runaway from their troubles in paradise among natives who don't even have the same luxury of living in that area the way they do

Their mom looks like Jefferey Irons
