    Scratchin Mamba

264 is actually abdecent enough sample size when p<0.001, the sample size is not the issue when the effect size is significant to that extent, it's more so about the quality of the sample.

You can criticize the sample being biased, but what variables would influence it exactly and in what direction would that causality be? I would argue that to study this as a cultural phenomenon in the West this is pretty much the most relevant demographic.

There needs to be more research done to see if it's replicable for sure tho.

    2 points:

There’s a whole host of research dating back to the 90s showing that narcissism’s been on the rise since we’ve starting measuring it, with both millennials and zoomers as narcissistic as the celebrities of older generations. So this a societal trend and showing it also exists in a subset of people(astrology fans) isn’t saying much

Also, the type of person that fills out personality surveys on Facebook is also inclined towards narcissism in the first place, not only with social media breeding self-centeredness and a sense of your life being the center of the universe generally (see “main character syndrome”) but also since indicates a person that sees themself as an interesting object worth of studying and a high degree of self importance in the first place.

any particular reason for the increase in narcissism? 🤔

Most of the increase in narcissism is attributed to more increasingly individualist cultural values and I think that's correct. Things like social media and less religiosity and church attendence probably have to do with it or are at least indicators of it.

However I do think that these more individualist values didn't come from nowhere and have a material economic cause. Most of the increase in narcissism has been observed in student cohorts between the 1970s and 2010s and this is also the time period of the rise of neoliberalism, which on an economic level promotes individualist values.

This study that looks at the difference in narcissism in East- and West Germanyevidence for that hypothesis that the increase in narcissism is due to economic factors.

These 2 points don't go against the findings of the study because it looks at the dfference in narcissism between people who do and those who don't believe in astrology. The possible effect of those two factors you named would apply to both of those groups and wouldn't be able to explain the difference between those groups.

Astrology is just polytheism and peoples attempts to feed the spiritual void their innate being requires... but dont want to fill it with belief in God if belief in God comes with responsibilities as the human feels arrogance to be able to do what it wants and shouldnt have to listen to external factors in decision making

so the results are no surprise, it didnt need a study to come to that conclusion but it is welcome

  • Jan 16, 2022

A lot of people saying it didn't need a study should know that a lot of things in psychology that seem to be intuitively true are often proven not to be in studies

  • discussing astrology with american women has to be the most mind numbing exercise possible

maybe its just bc the majority of women I met who believe in that s*** are the most disenfranchised, dry women ever. Like it literally acts as a personality and almost a reason to keep going it seems like. to each their own but ffs
