It actually happens and not just to Kendrick. It happens to artists critics don't like. That's why they're able to turn in reviews so quick for albums they didn't listen to beforehand.

Critics were always going to bash Donda. Didn't matter how good the album was. Kanye's shenanigans trumped the music and their minds were made up long before the album was released to the public. You can easily tell in the reviews where the critics use half the review to criticize the personal choices of the artist and their perception in the media over the last 6-12 months instead of actually reviewing the music they release.

Pitchfork does this the most.

Beyoncè can drop the worst music of her career and they'll give her a good review simply because it's Beyoncè and that's how they feel about her at this stage in her life and career.

I have friends that write reviews professionally and I can guarantee you they have never wrote a review for an album they didn't listen to. You're using an extreme to define the norm.
