last real Drake album for me was More Life with like a slight uptick when Her Loss came out. Everything else has been just there, its listenable but nothing that innovates the formula he had with the first 5 albums.
More Life was so good, it felt like an event when that was playing on apple music radio for the first time
I kinda hate his tongue-in-cheek writing. His purposefully cringy lines.
I don’t unfortunately. Everything seemed to go up in quality/soul from SFG to Views.
Views was a miss in my eyes (I understand how beloved it is and s***) but at least it was still Drake pushing the envelope and making music from the soul.
I feel like he latched on to the Views formula every release after due to the commercial success and each album was worse than the other.
Honestly Nevermind was a cool attempt to try something new, but even that could have been improved a lot more.
I feel like his beat selection became redundant, bars and flow declined, and his overall confidence is low.
143 Rolexes in my collection
I put the horns on the front of the Bach you know Drizzy gon roll like a Texan.
You been hating for 9 years now give it a rest
You been on your knees now for 9 yrs give them a rest.
Telling the truth is hating fyi.
Since NWTS, he fell off IMO.
He didn’t go fully that rap golden child trajectory I wanted him to go after hearing Thank Me Later
but he has evolved into something else entirely that I have learned to appreciate more and more as time goes on
I loved the trajectory he was on up until More Life. After that it’s been mostly disappointing for me but there’s always some stand out gems, but they also annoy me because i’d really want him to lock in and drop another undeniable classic with better substance atp
Also i respect the HNVM switch up with him trying to do something very different but i didn’t connect with that album at all
deadass i forgot more life even existed. some great tracks on there tho
I love the direction he went.
Once he got his first #1 as a leading artist, it’s like he unlocked a chakra that made him the hitmaker he is today.
SFG is amazing, but the way he is able to mold himself into what’s the next best thing sound wise and actually make hits out of it is what makes the man amazing
New Drake still goes crazy. I don’t believe he took a drop in quality at all
I kinda hate his tongue-in-cheek writing. His purposefully cringy lines.
That style of writing is extremely hit or miss. Same thing with Kanye
To be at the top of the game for 15+ years is no easy task, no matter what kind of artist you are. A guy like Drake too, who had to face a bunch of criticism and backlash when he started out, to prove all the doubters and haters wrong is legendary. And I think that timeframe of Take Care to Views is one of the greatest runs in hip hop.
I do wonder what his career would have looked like if he continued the artistic path he developed on Take Care/Nothing Was the Same. If IYRTITL never happened and he never bought into the tough guy mentality. Would have he ever gotten into the beef with Meek? The victory lap of WATTBA? Views being a focused project that just wasn’t a bloated horribly written mess? The strange “playlist” that’s More Life? There’s so many other event and such that had such a domino effect on his career it’s hard to say.
I haven’t “liked” a Drake album probably since 2017, but there’s always been a song or two every project since then I do like. I wish he had that artistic vision he once had, but that guy is so successful that even losing the biggest beef ever in rap, people are still playing his music.
I’d say no, I don’t like the direction that he went, but I totally get why it happened the way it did. And on the bright side, I did get some music I enjoy.
No, f*** nigga.
I hate that he decided to start rapping like a tough guy, and I miss when he love songs were actually love songs (e.g. "Find Your Love) as opposed to a portrait of dysfunctional and transactional relationships.
deadass i forgot more life even existed. some great tracks on there tho
His last great solo album imo
Nah. I kinda feel like he plateaued artistically after More Life. Honestly, Nevermind was a rare moment of inspired brilliance. Artistically I think that is his latest peak.
He’s made amazing songs since More Life, but as far as albums, it’s not his strong suit imo.
I do think Drake’s singing ability has gotten worse compared to comeback season, to now. Never viewed him as a real vocalist but he could carry a note smoother on older records than he does now. Anytime he really tries to sing now he just sounds so off key, n like his heart ain’t in it.
Rapping ability wise, he’s more or less been consistently good/great.
