This Schulz special is kinda mid
I like his podcast stuff and a lot of his older stand up but this felt off. He used to have good premises he’d build out a little, this one had some mid premises where you could kinda tell where it was headed and relied a lot more on tags and puns rather than the bit. The shock humor wares off. Some of it was solid, it’s not like it was terrible but paying for it plus all the hype kinda drags it down a little. A lot of it felt like it could have been expanded on a little and it would have helped a lot. He’s usually good at creating tension and holding the crowd in it for a little before the punch but this one it felt like he was trying to get through a lot of material in the hour.
I only like him on Flagrant now
He’s trying so hard to appeal to the right wing now instead of being this hip hop adjacent guy he used to be and it’s not it
He'll be fine.
Of course but it’s still ridiculous
Saying he encourages violence is ignorant

I don't see the right wing appeal you're talking about but it does feel like edginess is becoming too much of his act over the premises
s***s fire dont listen to him

so much of this holds up, comedy rarely stays good for even 10 years. I see influence in norm, patrice, louis, chappelle, Hedberg, rock and even guys coming out now, who else was this influential in standup? And what did he have to go off of?

I thought you were serious

this guy brought the whole aural tradition of vaudeville to the world (after chaplin had already brought the physical side) so he probably gets it tbh

Veers into harrowing performance art toward the end
got the dvd when I was in high school and was not prepared. Hits alot harder to see him this exposed in a little club than killing it in front of thousands.

Bro you still gotta hear his Comedy Store album if you’re into his early stuff

Pryor was influenced by all the old school goats: Cosby, Jerry Lewis, Lenny Bruce, D*** Gregory, Moms Mabley, Jack Benny, etc.

Groucho was literally synonymous with comedy for decades
Gave Bugs Bunny his entire personality

And I'm pretty sure he had a bigger impact and influence than Mae West or WC Fields. And was just better

Yeah I'm not really one for listening to comedy albums (similar allergy as podcasts) but maybe I'll look into it. Richard was such a physical performer I'm worried about missing half his act.

You’re definitely going to miss stuff but you’re also hearing great material. Some of Rich’s best work was on his albums.
