are you dumb? nowhere did i say i was "digital only". did you morons even read what i wrote? everything i talked about is freely accessible offline. hence DRM FREE. you niggas can't even wrap your heads around what im talking about you're so buck broken by console culture.

"Support storefronts like GOG and Steam, and pirate"

How are you doing these things without the internet

whether or not you have internet isn't the point. if you have DRM free games you can distribute them physically (not legally, but who gaf atp) your physical PS5 games BEEN had DRM. this ain't hard to understand: you NEVER owned those games TO BEGIN WITH regardless if you had em on a disc or not.

i never said it was some kind of complete replacement. i said if you really care about owning your media, this is the next step for you. all this other bullshit is unnecessary. yes it will suck for people without internet, but the only alternative is those games being drm free and thus possible to physically distribute, which is again only a thing on PC. or retro consoles ig

putting my two cents in because most people don't seem to have the right take on this more or less. sony doing this absolutely does suck and im not gonna deny that, but ultimately it's a distraction from the fact that just because you have a game on a physical disc doesn't mean you had any ownership or control of it in any real way. you were still required to use it in a proprietary locked down console, often had to connect to the Internet, etc. then people be like "oh but PC doesn't have physical games" like i don't have terabytes of my games stored DRM free on my server and multiple PCs. who gives a f*** if it's stored on a disc that'll rot eventually? what really matters is whether you control the software or not, period. putting aside the novelty of having the box and the instruction booklet and all that, because yeah that's nice, but i can just look up scans of that s***. it's not worth sacrificing my digital freedom. hell i could put these games on a disc myself if i wanted, bc i actually "own" the games drm free. putting aside the fact that even back in the day when we were kids with the gamecube we were still buying licenses, and just because GOG sells you an offline installer doesn't mean it's also not a license.

what im trying to say is the concept of physical media is misunderstood as f*** in certain ways in these convos bc people conflate physical with true digital freedom, but these things don't inherently have anything to do with each other. so if you really hate this decision, sell your ps5 and get a PC and support storefronts like GOG and steam games that don't ship with DRM, itch.io, learn to pirate, etc.

    i totally agree.

modern physical media isnt a n64 cartridge anymore.

just because its on a physical media doesnt mean its not part of a subscription or planned obsolescence.

there are many many cases where pirating something drm free and downloading it on a harddrive has far more digital freedom than something on a disc.

this issue is way way deeper than whether or not something is on a disc.

but this move by sony, is done because planned obsolescence is so ever present they can get away with this and it will further encourage much much more of it.

yes, this is the correct take. anyone who calls me a "digital only" nigga is two digit IQ confirmed and didn't understand a DAMN thing about my post or about what you just said. i own ALL MY GAMES physically because i have total control over what happens to em. i can put em on a disc or a cartridge bc i control the software on my drive! period. that's THE most important thing to have in this discussion. i could put it on a flash drive and give it to a friend, and i have done s*** like that.

if you're mad about this, you're mad about a SYMPTOM, not some kind of cause. and once again, IT'S STILL BAD, but again, just a symptom of this much bigger problem.

exactly. just bc the games had a physical disc tht was still DRM locked and you had to still connect to the internet to download doesn't mean that s*** wasn't basically the same thing as buying from psn store this whole time. if these games were actually drm free and actually had all the content on disc, i'd be much madder about this, but that hasn't existed for a long time on these b**** ass locked down console platforms.

i name dropped MULTIPLE storefronts that let you buy games DRM free, which you ignored conveniently. you really are f***ing stupid, and i can tell you had no reply to what i said before so here YOU are dapping up the other moron itt, who admitted he don't even have any idea what im talking about no less. nothing about what i said doesn't support developers. you literally don't even know how little you know, it's incredible, and you're so ignorant that you don't even wanna look it up with google right there and s***. go ahead and ignore this post too while you "cry on" that nigga's shoulder.

Yes this was always the case but imo the concept of ownership is (unsurprisingly, given the circumstances) framed through liberal notions of individual property. Hence why the most surface level observation leaves most gamers with wanting to simply obtain the most amount of physical commodities (games, consoles, etc) to combat anxieties over losing any sense of autonomy in the digital age

nothing to say about any of my actual arguments, just insults. can't admit you were wrong about drm free storefronts, DRM loaded discs, that you were just talking out of your ass for no reason when i literally agree with y'all, so you dodge. you're a coward.
