I hope a new form of compression is on the horizon because COD MW1 reboot being 180GB is unjustifiable insanity

To be fair that’s already fixed and newer cods are < 100gb

that would require waaaayyyyy tooo much foresight for these companies, you're giving em way too much credit

Giving a year and a half notice on this won’t change people be mad regardless. I think this could have waited

I think they know they can’t win this, basically piss people off now because it’s unavoidable, then start the rollout for ps6 in 2027

Makes you wonder, if you’re Microsoft and Sony and you understand how bad this looks, how do they try to win the momentum war? A game? I guess but honestly neither of them are known for having a particular “system seller” type game at launch in several generations.

A helix exclusive could just be a new halo, not sure what a ps6 exclusive would be like, obviously physint will get teased but it won’t be ready for launch given than OD is still in the works. What could they possibly have? if nothing, what does ps6 have? They’ve pissed off collectors, the price will piss off the average consumer, and most games will be crossgen with ps5 likely so what reason will there be to move? They need bloodborne 2 at this point.

I think the ease of getting games on disc and knowing they would work on ps6 would slap . Again I’m more have a disc drive for ps5-1 games and movies but ps6 digital only

It has basically nothing going for it right now, which is why people have been saying the console looks DOA and Microsoft has an opportunity to win the next-gen if they play their cards right

comparing the numbers between physical and digital sales would only make sense when it's strictly about games that are actually available in both formats

    otherwise it's useless

  • HaroldsChicken

Microsoft is working on a physical to digital entitlement program and has been for a while

Never even considered that, Sony needs to do that imo. Especially if they want people to buy a full handheld console that doesn’t play discs.

Gaming is such a varied and huge medium that I think it'll be impossible to ever get a concrete number on what the split between physical & digital sales is

But I definitely believe the number for digital is overblown and it's closer to 60/40 than it is to 90/10

Seems like they’re basically cooked. Not sure about Xbox though, Helix is a smart pivot but I don’t think it’ll be enough. They also have to contend with:

    a)it’ll be very expensive
    b)no disc drive
    c)most games will be cross-gen

switch 2 about to outsell the series consoles and it’s only been out for a year

putting my two cents in because most people don't seem to have the right take on this more or less. sony doing this absolutely does suck and im not gonna deny that, but ultimately it's a distraction from the fact that just because you have a game on a physical disc doesn't mean you had any ownership or control of it in any real way. you were still required to use it in a proprietary locked down console, often had to connect to the Internet, etc. then people be like "oh but PC doesn't have physical games" like i don't have terabytes of my games stored DRM free on my server and multiple PCs. who gives a f*** if it's stored on a disc that'll rot eventually? what really matters is whether you control the software or not, period. putting aside the novelty of having the box and the instruction booklet and all that, because yeah that's nice, but i can just look up scans of that s***. it's not worth sacrificing my digital freedom. hell i could put these games on a disc myself if i wanted, bc i actually "own" the games drm free. putting aside the fact that even back in the day when we were kids with the gamecube we were still buying licenses, and just because GOG sells you an offline installer doesn't mean it's also not a license.

what im trying to say is the concept of physical media is misunderstood as f*** in certain ways in these convos bc people conflate physical with true digital freedom, but these things don't inherently have anything to do with each other. so if you really hate this decision, sell your ps5 and get a PC and support storefronts like GOG and steam games that don't ship with DRM, itch.io, learn to pirate, etc.

These digital-only niggas kill me man

As if the internet is something that everyone has access to and always works and will always be available 100% of the time

  • That's why I mentioned earlier itt, if Xbox wanted to start to make positive noise again

Be petty, make Helix have a disc drive, let consumers have that option, give us a 5080 equivalent GPU, and eat the loss.

One of those they can definitely do Halo aint moving s***
