Lol . I called this a few days ago in the GTA thread
GTA 6 being digital only was a clear sign that Sony was planning for the PS6 to be a digital console
The writing was on the wall unfortunately

What does this mean for gamestop
They’ve been coasting on meme Stock for five years now. Nothing changes
95% of the store is funko pops and Pokemon cards

They pivot to being a full-time Funko Pop retailer for a few years and then declare bankruptcy by the end of the decade.
Exactly. Just because they're not buying physical in-store does not mean people aren't buying physical at all. People act like online retailers don't exist
also ok sure like ¾ of game sales are digital now. but how much of that percentage is made up of cheaper games that would never need a physical copy in the first place?
because i buy plenty of indies but i have never (and will never) buy a full-priced, AAA game on digital. two totally different levels of purchase to me. and i think more consumers are like that than sony realises.
GTA VI can do it because nobody was ever skipping that game. but idk if people are going to look at the next horizon or tsushima or whatever the same way. they're banking that people will just give in, and they might, but i do think it might backfire. especially if other devs don't follow their lead.

capcom newest financial report is 90% digital during the quarter where RE9 and Pragmata released
its been over
Yeah this current gen is my last.
Overpriced consoles, an $80 subscription for online play, and in two years, you won't even be able to get games cheap anymore because they just announced the death of the second-hand market on a random Wednesday.
It’s a s***ty decision but PlayStation executives didn’t just walk into a GameStop, see no one in there, and go “Welp no one is buying physicals anymore, guess we can stop selling them.”
Physical media is on the rise (somewhat) when it comes to music and movies, but in gaming it continues to fall at a pretty rapid rate.
I think the market is big enough to still warrant physicals, and it will be always be there to some extent so even if they become very limited, in my ideal world they would never go away entirely, but it’s not like there’s some major blind spot that they’re missing when it comes to online retailers. That’s included in the data that had them make this decision.
It's falling because the companies are prioritizing them and giving them digital at cheaper price points.
You sell a digital-only console during a pandemic for $100 cheaper than the disc version, what do you think people are gonna buy?
You start subscription services in which gamers can play hundreds of games for $19.99 a month during a time where new games are $70+ and most people are struggling financially, you think they won't subscribe?
So yes, digital games have taken over the market in recent years, but I think a big factor in that is the companies pushing them in that direction rather than gamers not wanting to own anything tangibly all of a sudden
The netflixification of media. nothing's special anymore
F*** Netflix for what they’ve done to a couple of generations
Put it this way:
If Sony announced two subscription models tomorrow and the pricing was the same, selection of games was the same, but the only thing different was either you could access the games digitally or have physical copies shipped to your door, do you really think most people would choose the digital option?

In music only cause of different artwork and stans 🤣
If it wasn't for different versions of vinyls that s*** would be dead

put it this way:
f***ing dumb ass idea vs ok idea
"which one would you choose"
lmfao
physical only matters if the data can exist without patches or updates or any internet connection.
most of the games you buy today will not start without one of those.
at least sony is not gonna break in my house and steal my sony bluray player
If you don’t think Xbox is gonna follow suit bro I have some bad news for you
MS wants a disc-less Xbox because it means more game pass subs
My first thought was jumping ship to Xbox
No physicals for a closed off ecosystem. You will pay sonys price and you will like it ctfu

We've already established you will eat up anything these companies serve you

I would because I could access my game immediately instead of waiting for a box to be shipped to me and I won’t have a physical game case/disc to store
Digital is more convenient
Yeah Sony dgaf, PlayStation 6 ain't going to support Dolby Vision for 4Ks either

82% of all PS5’s sold up to now had the disc drive.
I think you greatly underestimate people’s willingness to buy the “best” thing when it comes to tech. It’s the same thing with the iPhone Pro’s. They LAP the base models in sales multiple times over despite hardly anyone actually needing the “pro” features.
What does this mean for gamestop
most of their store is nerd merch and switch games already they'll be ok lmao
should go all in on retro games now tbh
