This is an early work by Engels, who was in in his 20s at the time, so the terminology might not be as precise as later on.

Basically, private property is used as a synonym for capitalist property in that part. A feudal lord was still bound to his land as a landlord, he couldn't just go around buying new land (that's why they conquered land and married into new families). The landlords later on could buy and sell land as they pleased.

Generally, there is a distinction between personal property and private property. Private property exists for economic reasons, like real estate, whereas personal property exists for personal consumption. Nobody is gonna take away your toothbrush because that's your personal property, but they might take away your toothbrush factory.

Private property I would say has existed far longer than feudalism, and I think Engels and Marx also say this in their later works. It basically started with class society, which started with the dawn of agriculture about 12.000 years ago. However, capitalism is the economic mode of production where private property has been the most relevant form of property.
