Communist have never been just about labor action which is what you actually mean, many issues that dont seem unrelated actually do effect the working class and so communists have usually been at the forefront of most progressive movements. This isn't to simplify the story, because they still existed in reactionary societies full of racism/sexism/etc and the way these things influenced them varied across time and space. My point is the scope of communist political activity has always been very wide, and their stances were rarely perfect but they were usually the most progressive.

Communists have a range of opinion on Stalin and not everybody supports him. Even communists who use his image don't necessarily support everything he did. The response I've seen when people bring up his homophobia usually isn't endorsement but condemnation, even if they tend to make excuses.

When people use someones image, whether its Lincoln, Mao, Stalin, Obama, its not usually because they endorse all their policies but because they represent something. What a symbol represents varies depends on who and when you ask, and their answers might even contradict each other. In contemporary China for example, almost the entirety of the political spectrum claims Maos legacy.

Also forgot to mention but when you say "liberal woke ideology", liberals have historically not been that "woke" at all. Even today, liberal parties routinely take up reactionary policies when it comes to race/gender/disability/etc
