Kinda funny that the public response to Abe's assassination ended up being "yeah RIP or whatever but let's focus on this Unification Church s***"

I think the author is exaggerating if not outright fabricating some of these examples, but either way these passages don't make Chinese kids seem "alright" at all?

these examples are massive exaggerations, western culture and media is incredibly popular in china. hatred of japan in china is longstanding and not really related to current geopolitical situations. the politics of the youth there are no different in variety and levels of extremity from that of the youth in the US. acting like youth there in a rapidly industrialized society with high urban density and parallel societal structures to the west are going to act like weird aliens just because it's an asian country really exposes the biases of the author.

Zero COVID really makes Westerners seethe a lot. I'm sure thousands of families would give up some temporary freedoms if it means they could have protected their loved ones from an unnecessary death

americans be like "yeah i'm a nationalist what of it" and then be like "no i will not make the sacrifice of not going to mcdonalds weekly for the greater good of the community"

If China had the same death rates as for example the USA, about 4.3 people would have died

Instead about 5000 died of COVID

Das Kapital is one of the most cited books in academia ever.

Sadly not in the economics department.

That's what I was taught about the DDR. And "the party always had 99% of the votes"

I visited school in Germany and never heard Marx mentioned. Also the Ottoman Empire was never mentioned. We never really learned about WW2 from 1940 - 1945. We did have classes on the Holocaust basically every year from grade 8 to grade 12, including multiple visits to concentration camps. The Soviet Union was never really mentioned much. East Germany was the subject of one or two lessons. Never learned about the Ruhr Uprising or the street violence of 1920s Weimar, or the Bavarian peoples republic despite being in Bavaria . Rosa and Karl were mentioned in a lesson but they portrayed it like they announced their new state too late and the Weimar state was announced an hour earlier so that's why it got recognized lol

China was not really taken seriously yet, just a place for cheap production. My geography teacher didnt know Taiwan was called ROC and also denied manmade climate change existed. Basically every human-geographic problem we a***yzed boiled down to "they would need more money to fix it", without asking why or how the third world or other places get societal problems like this. Also another teacher suggested the third world is poor because of the climate making it warm so people become too lazy

Every soc101 professors section on Marx is basically “he had a really simplistic view of the world where he thought everyone was in 1 of 2 groups. Then Weber came along and took some of the good things Marx said but added ~nuance~”
