Nope, they were not an equal part of Japan as they were in the Qing Dynasty. Furthermore, they don't share the language, ethnicity or religion with Japan and Japanese never considered them a part of their own society.

Because every state needs some semblance of justification to exist and be reproduced by the public, with history, ethnicity and sharing the language always being strong arguments.
sure, but i'm just saying that's all irrelevant and its also a position which opens itself up to someone disagreeing with it based on semantic or epistemological difference. if that difference exists anyway i don't see why there's any need for an argument beyond x good y bad - that's ultimately what it boils down to on both sides. my original post wasn't intended as an argumentative claim or anything

You're assuming life for people under Japanese rule was worse than under Qing rule I just don't see evidence for that. When the island was handed to Japan, Taiwanese were given 2 years to choose between mainland China and Taiwan under Japan, less than 10,000 left and 2.5 million stayed

okay i didnt think anything you said before was that egregious overall but life was definitely objectively worse under japanese rule, there was basically ethnic apartheid and there were multiple rebellion uprisings within the country. the only "positive" is that japan built infrastructure but you may as well say that about the US in Afghanistan
