whole world black and white huh
That's you! You're the one saying black and white
That's you! You're the one saying black and white
im literally saying that the production of animal products is inextricably linked with politics because its lawmakers and tax dollars that is propping up this horrible industry! its very gray!
There are more pressing material issues than the morality of animal husbandry/exploitation

And I'm telling you shaming people for their grocery list is not a political solution to that issue. You are treating people as black and white. I'm treating the situation like something bigger.

Just because someone feels shame when I inform them of the consequences of their actions does not mean that I shamed them. I literally gave a presentation on veganism a couple weeks ago and I can't count the number of times I made sure to tell people that I have no ill-will towards them and that I want them not to feel shame because that's literally counter productive to my goals.

And I'm glad other people are focusing on those issues! We can't all do everything.

I’m cooking, but reading “What is to be Done?” By Lenin is a good one
food ethics debates are cool but can we talk about how over the past like several weeks there's been massive destructions of like legit every major food processing plant in the US like one after another, and it's like virtually all plants which happen to deal with organic foods

To add on to this one of the main things that promote meat eating in culture is religion.
Growing up in a Ethiopian christian orthodox household I was always told as a young kid that animals were brought on this planet by god for our survival, that's pretty deeply rooted lol, and of course you got many religious/cultural customs that involve eating meat. And of course none of this is due to colonialism because Ethiopia was never colonized and adopted christianity before any European country did.
Funnily enough tho my mom later became a vegetarian tho, and everytime she tells somebody who's Ethiopian she doesn't eat meat they're absolutely dumbfounded
What this also means is that when you're promoting veganism, if you wanna reach certain communities you're gonna have to be careful that they won't perceive it as just another part of westernization and taking away from their culture, which is in itself ofc a very real thing. Like here in the Netherlands there was some discussiom about certain practices in slaughtering and it was quickly turned into a culture war issue with muslim immigrants. Tbh a lot of grillpilled fellas with immigrant background already see veganism as a whole as some goofy western bullshit so that's also def smth to think about @plants
i love veganism discourse for this exact reason
ik its some wrecker s*** lmao but its such an interesting contradiction to me and in the way you described it's chauvinistic in the same way "LGBT rights" issues are weaponized, yet like your mom you can still resolve it to understand that it's right.
in some vague way i feel like it's the same thing w the need to promote socialism through self determination as an objective correct orientation that reaction will fester against if imposed by any other means.
And I'm glad other people are focusing on those issues! We can't all do everything.
ik you're getting some hostility towards certain orientations you have on your positions but i think this is actually a important point.
collectively and as collectivists we have strength in celebrating our diversity of experience and approach. however this is an issue of intersectionality where an intersectional a***ysis is incredibly important.
capitalism perpetuates carnism through similar mechanisms in which it also perpetuates racism and sexism. as also with moving towards the abolishment of racism and sexism, both horizontal and vertical approaches are necessary to be effective, but these non-principal contradictions will only ever truly be resolved once capitalism has itself resolved into socialism.
like you said earlier, the development of these things is in parallel, but it is also interlinked and heavily determined by the intrinsic economic base of society.
i think you're doing good work advocating for veganism, but it's important to understand that the horizontal AND vertical intersectional approaches to abolishing carnism requires simultaneous revolutions of the economic AND social structures of society.
i just don't want your work to be wasted when it is important work

yeah imma be honest i just aint got it in me to be active in another area like I am with veganism thru my street activism and with my day job working at a homeless shelter. i can barely fit that stuff in and also be a good husband, stay fit and eat healthy, spend time with friends and family, etc.
i really appreciate your reply man

from each according to their capability and all that
there's not even a strong centralized socialist movement in the US and i know you are personally class conscious, so i think just spreading your class consciousness through your own work and everything is fine for the moment as long as you get this stuff and know when its time to support it

twitter, reddit, various chan sites/boards (i.e. leftypol), there's some threads on places like kiwifarms & lolcow if you can put up with those sides of the internet
if you want really schizo rambling there's dedicated conspiracy encyclopedias/wikipedia-clones (like wikipedia just for conspiracies) which are fun to laugh at
