And by the way, meat isn't accessible to a large part of the world either and it has devastating effects, but not because it's some essential food.

Not sure if you were aware but as of 10 years ago 82% of starving children lived in countries where food was fed to animals, and the animals were eaten by western countries. But I'm sure muuuuch has changed in the last 10 years or so.

    Sources:

"Improving Child Nutrition: The achievable imperative for global progress". UNICEF. April 2013 "Livestock production index". The World Bank II "Global livestock production systems". Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Rome 2011

This isn't because of meat though, it's the fault of the conditions that require them to prioritize production over their own well being. It's starving children in places where the money goes towards rakes and fertilizer for veggies instead of feeding people too

First sentence is my opinion. Don't have a source for the second, but could just as well talk about any system where money goes toward production at the expense of health. Your meat example is just one instance of that

It's not 90% people from the first world who buy meat from grocery stores bro what

And even in the first world it's definitely more common for people who are wealthier to be vegan than people who are poor

There are plenty of reasons and ways to advocate for veganism but calling all meat eaters privileged is not it and sounds extremely out of touch

this just america so take that for what it is

Some 62% of American shoppers buy their meat at supermarkets; 23% buy at a multi-product hypermarket, such as Walmart; 7% buy at a wholesale-oriented club store such as Costco; 5% at a butcher's shop; and 3% at organic or speciality stores.

    foodnavigator-usa.com/Article/2014/12/18/A-focus-on-the-retail-meat-market-in-the-USA#:~:text=Some%2062%25%20of%20American%20shoppers,at%20organic%20or%20speciality%20stores.

And yeah it's rich mfs in the first world who have the time to learn about this s*** and make changes. ppl in poverty just barsly scraping by and we ain't even speaking on the culture surrounding meat in many countries. it's hard to break free from that programming especially if you hardly paying rent, those ppl ain't got the time of energy to make changes like this smh

food ethics debates are cool but can we talk about how over the past like several weeks there's been massive destructions of like legit every major food processing plant in the US like one after another, and it's like virtually all plants which happen to deal with organic foods

4/21 - "unidentified plane" crashes into idaho potato plant
    idahostatesman.com/news/nation-world/national/article260423897.html

4/19 - fire destroys azure standard hq (biggest organic distributor in the US)

4/14 - fire at salinas food processing plant
    abc7news.com/taylor-farms-fire-salinas-evacuation-shelter-in-place-california-ammonia-explosion-risk/11747214

4/12 - 16 hour fire at conway beef & pork plant in NH

4/1 - fire at fresh onion packing plant in south texas
    producebluebook.com/2022/04/01/rio-freshs-onion-warehouse-damaged-in-fire/#

this isn't even all of them there's been like 2-4 of these a week since mid-february

Changing your diet in the first world doesn't really change your privilege. Being deprived of something is austerity, sure, but the third world is deprived of a lot of more essential things than hamburger. Americans are pretty much killing themselves with red meat. It's often a sign of wealth or well-being to be able to curate your diet so perfectly.

First world veganism and vegetarianism is like a personal moral or health or virtue signaling action but it's not a politic. I will say when faiths have dietary restrictions that is kind of a binding mechanism. Unfortunately there's no political institution with that pull in America championing veganism. Maybe if you get a socialist movement off the ground with a tenant of veganism that would be something.

Otherwise you're pretending your consumerism is politics and that's cope

My point is that people in poorer countries also buy meat from grocery stores or markets and it's not just the elites that do so

And yeah there's an obvious economic obstacle to worry about food ethics for people who are barely making ends meet
