ValentineCause they been running this Mr. Morale narrative for 2 years now. You see how they already manipulated people to talking down on TPAB. It’s not insecurity, it’s protecting art from these disingenuous f***s any chance we get
Feels disingenuous on both sides, being hyperbolic about the album doesn’t protect it. Any Drake stan “narrative” is gonna be f***ing annoying, that’s evergreen. But we’re massively overstating power if we concede that their “narrative” could ever have any harmful effect on the art. The opinion of a non-listener couldn’t matter less!
I liked Morale a lot and I still do, there’s plenty to love on that album and plenty to dislike in equal measure. That uneven, messy quality is part of it’s appeal, no? The contradictions are the crux of the whole thing, IMO we’re gutting the heft of the album to pretend like it leaves no room for disappointment; part of what makes Morale so interesting is that it feels like the first Kendrick album where you can walk away from it going “hmm, idk about that one!” and he wouldn’t sweat it. Whereas GKMC-thru-DAMN. all feel like they’re aiming to be epics with massive scope that appeal to everyone

guwopThere really wasnt a coherent statement made w the album imo, the kyrie/kanye-like 5g/vaccine/cancel culture commentary rlly drags down the album even though the songs that were reflections on trauma were great. Feels like bro was critiquing everything without rlly delving into anything meaningful in those moments. Worldwide steppers is a great example of this like what the hell is bro actually tryna say lol
Also musically it had so many lacklustre moments like purple hearts, die hard, the baby keem interlude, silent hill, the prod just wasnt as exciting as kendricks best and the attempts at making poppy songs are like kendricks worst in his discog imo
i dont think there had to a be a coherent statement, the whole album is just the breakdown and realization that he's not a savior
