Coens have really high highs, but then I think of movies like Intolerable Cruelty or Lady killers 🫤

I wasn’t crazy about Hail Caesar either, and I keep trying to force myself to like it

You easily named the bottom three, it only goes up from there

I say consistent being Hail Caesar is one of their more recent films. Actually within the last two they collectively did together. And the last full length story they did together.

But their highs definitely outweigh their lows. No country, Fargo, Serious man, True Grit, Blood simple are incredible films to me.

Burn after and oh brother is cool, decent.

I just look at Coen brothers the guys who made no country and then scratch my head when trying to figure out how they made Intolerable cruelty :hah

Intolerable Cruelty felt like some director for hire s***. Ladykillers seems more egregious cause it’s corny and broad, but IC has to be their worst through sheer blandness and forgettability.

Facts because they had a lot of other writers on board too for that film smh. Coens are at their best when it’s just them, when they write and direct. Not write and then let someone else direct, or direct someone else’s script.

This is how I felt when I revisited Donnie Darko

American Beauty still ain’t it tho

I’m an American Beauty defender. I think it pairs well with Happiness as an intimate look at turn of the century alienation in the west.

Now QT IMO doesn’t have a bad film. And I’m curious to see if niggas will appreciate his work more as we get older, like 20-30 years from now

The difference between them is that they’ll take on more diverse projects and there’s more room to miss that way, but it’s still very rare for the Coens. QT is very particular and wouldn’t allow himself to fumble his consistency.

My problem with it is that it’s incredibly reliant on broad coincidences. Like, everything with Chris Cooper feels like some contrived sitcom s***.

But to be fair it playing out like a twisted contrived sitcom kind of works for what it’s going for.

All those supposed “entry level” directors people dismiss you might have a phase where you think you’ve grow out of them and then you come back around and realize they’re just incredible and consistent.

Yeah I think it's called the "stopped being a pretentious a******" phase

I wish NWR would direct other peoples screenplays more. I don’t think writing is his strong point.

Yeah I love American Beauty. It's self aware but not obnoxious and I think it's really funny. Plus Kevin Spacey turning out to be an evil villain irl just makes it even more ridiculous.

I guess that’s true lol. But it’s understandable why someone when getting exposed to more diverse art will start to look back differently on the stuff that initially got them into it. That being said it’s more “mature” to realize that the fact it got them into it to begin with shows it’s quality and merit.

It honestly isn’t. But fortunately his on-the-nose camp hits the same part of my brain that enjoys David Lynch dream logic so it ends up working for me in spite of that.

No 10000%….Coens prolly has one of the most versatile filmography out of the recent guys. You never know what to expect from them. Whereas QT can be predictable, you know it’s gonna be very dialogue heavy and you know there will be blood.

Speaking of there will be blood, Mr. PTA is a guy who I think is versatile like the Coens but hits the mark everytime (except for LP)

Word I feel you, I’m one of those guys who says Drive is NWR best work lol. I think he could do more amazing things if he at least aligned with a co-writer, cus the f***in visuals is incredible.

I thought Only god forgives was a complete snooze story wise but visually it’s one of the best shot films I’ve seen out of the recent stuff

PTA is like best friends with QT so I think his need for consistency has rubbed off on him. I actually think PTA is pretty predictable (in a good way) despite evolving his style. Most of his films concern two people and the tension between them.
