Nah ima definitely check cus I like films like The Hit which is said to sorta be an influence on this. I also like Gangster No. 1

But part of what made QT’s dialogue unique was the pop culture reference, wouldn’t say it’s unnecessary, it made it realistic hearing two Gangsters have a regular ass conversation like me and you would about McDonalds

How is he not self indulgent? lmao all he does is copy his literal favorite film scenes, and even adds in his own sexual kinks with all the feet shots in every film of his. Too meta for it's own good sometimes which i never like either

I still enjoy his films, and he doesn't have a ''bad'' film in his filmog. But it kinda lost the magic for me it once had when i didn't see all the films he stole from + the Japanese legend which he desperately tries to emulate (Takashi Miike)

Inglourious Basterds still a classic tho

And after all this time the one film by him that maybe holds up the most is Jackie Brown, which is one where he actually toned it down a bit and just focused on what he does best: write funny characters with a lot of personality and mix it with some dope ass songs lol

Lol that’s not self indulgence bro. He’s openly honest about being inspired by damn near every film he’s watched and copies a lot of s*** to remix. That’s basically what every artist (in all forms) does.

Now if he was hogging references only for himself and not allowing other people to copy s*** he copies and being selfish, that would be self indulgence. I would even say if he lied about being inspired by others and tried to make it seem like he’s some genius who invented all these ideas that could be self indulgent too.

That all being said, no director is flawless. Bruh, my favorite film of all time is flawed and idc because i love it regardless. It just sometimes b like that

Not really in the way he does it, there's just something about the excess of the use of those things, which makes it come across more like a ''hey guys look how cool i am for this obscure genre b-movie reference'' and not just plain homage. Of course that's also what it is, there's undeniably true passion coming from him for those flicks, but it just doesn't always come across as sincere when put in one of his films

But like i said, that's not my main point for him being self indulgent. I don't kink shame but the feet stuff has gotten too much for me. Especially in UOATIH it really got to an annoying point.. even if he did that to clap back at or roll with the meme, there's no reason for it to be in the film that much

Also, Django is one of the most enteraining blockbusters of the 10s imo (i even still have it on 5/5), and even that one still has huge issues when it comes to self indulgence. Some really try-hard lines he wrote (the supposedly badass one liners) and when the film was supposed to end, he added another f***ing 20 mins just because he wants to shove himself into the film as an actor again

I still respect the guy and his filmog but there's some obvious flaws that i just feel should be acknowledged sometimes because mannn his stans are f***ing barbz tier fr and act like he's the greatest gift of cinematic history. Don't even get me started on Nolan Another guy who hasn't made a trash film but also doesn't deserve all that d*** sucking his fanbase does

Oh no i wasn't strictly talking dialogue. My intial post was supposed to mean that Glazer in Sexy Beast did the QT-like snappy dialogue, minus the self indulgence from QT films.. not his dialogue.. just wanted to clarify that

Lol bro relax QT my nigga for life. I can agree with some those points, like the feet stuff and inserting himself into the film. But the copying stuff, nah, because there’s no proof to that. You’re assuming he’s showcasing those things to say “look how cool I am for knowing these films” but really he could of just been going through a creative rut and needed something to copy.

QT is like Kanye, and what they are, are blenders. They know how to take multiple things and blend them together to make a cohesive project. Now there’s an art to it. It’s like making a smoothie. Now they may not be inventing actual fruits but they can make a damn good smoothie and know what to add in. Which takes talent in itself, cus the minute you add Turkey gravy to a fruit smoothie it becomes nasty. And I myself know how to make great smoothies too.

I'm not hating on the guy, but his films honestly just aren't as enjoyable to me as they once were after many rewatches. The humor and ''cool'' moments are something that work the best on a first watch anyway with QT

It's also just that i, like everyone else i would hope, changed in my viewing habits. The emotional aspect as a viewer has become more and more important for me (doesn't even have to mean an emotional story, just the feel a film conveys). It's something that QT films lack in that regard. And when i DO feel like just throwing on something that tries to be solely badass, funny and entertaining, there are other directors i'm more infatuated with at the moment that do something similar like QT
