Howard crossed too many people, made too many bets and took chances the whole movie....he's a gambling addict who made a move he couldn't puzzle himself out of and got what was coming. it wasn't even necessarily sad or displeasing either its just what happens when you are in too deep after getting out for so long.

Their stories have always been about troubled people like this. those types of people don't just win in the end its not some fairy tale. Even with Good Time which you mentioned its not like Connie would ever just run off with his brother to some paradise free of worry
