another way to look at it is that these R&B acts have enough talent to get by without playing some "character". Usher, Chris Brown, H.E.R, Ella Mai, Miguel are all examples of that
The Weeknd, Frank, Lizzo, etc use gimmicks to fill the gaps that their music leaves IMO, and it clearly works
John Legend has never had an image, for example. He's a relatable homebody who makes good music.

They can get by, but is that really enough? You can only get by so far before someone with the combination of talent and appeal takes your spot completely.
Also not understanding the Frank hate itt.

That was his image, lol and he did it perfectly

We f*** with Frank. He's really talented. Frank created a record that answers only to its maker’s own vision. I think that's really special in relation to our discussion on branding.
Doesnt matter, the average fan still link Weeknd with R&B because of how he came in the game
Everyone not on KTT lvls with this, so thats really irrelevant.
This isnt true at all because the average weeknd fan isnt even an r&b fan like that. Weeknd doesnt even have real r&b hits. Hes a pop star at this point

Frank is a capable artist, especially with the pen. But you're in an R&B thread which is definitely full of appreciators of vocals, which is not an area Frank excels in.
I really believe it'd be best for music if he wrote for these artists who could do the lyrics more justice

But that's literally Miguel's image.
His social media presence for the last 5+ years has been him and Nazanin. He's a relatable, loved-up homebody.

Was it? I always thought it was the Rockstar thing, goes to show he just needs to connect with the audience more.
I like Miguel. Party Life is a great underrated track from his Art Dealer Chic mixtapes.
He's not as big as Abel or as much of a cult artist as Frank, but he's on his own wave and puts out music when he wants to. Have to respect that.
He shouldn’t have done the leg drop, Lowkey that overshadowed his music
Trust me, he regrets it more than anybody.
Literally a top tier artist
Absolutely, top 3 living male vocalist with Chris Brown and Bruno Mars for me. He may not be as popular but his music will last.

HER and Chris Brown both highkey came out with gimmicks. Chris was “he’s so young!” And HER got a big media push to say “HER play gatar”. Gimmicks are a part of the music industry and I think it’s disingenuous to act like the only people who use them are those who are lacking in music. Also I kind of fail to see how Frank moving how he moves qualifies as “playing a character” or even a gimmick, if anything it puts the focus on the music

Because he made one album? Then went right back to being the fun-loving, care-free R&B homebody?

Miguel hasn't missed his chance yet though.
He can still have his moment just like Thugger did last year.

Yeah and people forget hes also one of them dudes that takes their time with albums
Cant wait for the next one
Trust me, he regrets it more than anybody.
I bet. Honestly it even made it a little harder for me to take him serious

Everybody makes mistakes.

Didn't really change anything for me bc it was out of character, he was on d**** and made a stupid decision. Lead to him becoming more humble and relatable at the end.
