i mean very true, kendrick has the artistic freedom to take more risks and people will still tune in regardless

    Exactly

I also think that the respective albums played a part in it as well.

Morale was divisive, some people love it a lot and some people strongly dislike it. But regardless, it had bite and it was memorable. People still reference it 3 years later.

2000 was a sequel to the classic mixtape 1999, but it lacked the bite and cutting edge energy that 1999 had. It played it VERY safe. No one really disliked it but no one really talks about it much either. The Forever Story by JID gets referenced way more for example.

this is such a bizarre beef because joey came for kendrick then immediatedly realized he wasn't in a 300 mile proximity of him career-wise and instead got caught up beefing with essentially C list rappers defending kendrick by proxy but turning into a personal beef

Exactly lmao if I’m Joey I’m lowkey mad that they responding to me instead because I’m in the same class with Kendrick basically (although Daylyt is a battle rap legend)

Ask Dot about Killuminati Pt 2 like it wasn’t one of the countless control responses that didn’t warrant a response

I mean it’s cool he feels himself but genuinely, there’s a reason Kendrick has slept at night without ever needing to respond to Joey Bada$$

If he Joey wanted to lean into 2000, it should have been Just Blaze, Bink, Rockwilder styled beats instead of that Neo dust s***

Yes I agree. Since 1999 leaned so heavily towards gritty 90s beats, it would’ve been a clever stylized choice to rap over 2000s NY production. The Statik Selekta production he favored for the majority of the album I found to be…bland honestly. Being a boom bap beat doesn’t automatically make it good.

His rapping skill also took a noticeable decline after AABA though and although he’s recovered it somewhat recently, it was evident that something was lacking on his end with the majority of 2000.

It's his fault for entertaining them. Ray is young & hungry. Of course he's going to try to get a bigger artist's attention. Joey should have learned from Kendrick to not respond to people lower on the food chain.

Yeah I mean I'm not saying it's a classic, but he's certainly making an effort towards creating quality music. GKMC is a once a decade type classic. Not every rapper is capable of making that.

He def got some talent. Him studying songwriting and working with amazing producers might get him somewhere further. Right now, he's in a weird tier where's not beloved like Black Hippy members, SZA or Say and doesn't have the underdog push like Doechiii does. But people are responding more favorably to him then Reason, who was the worst signee of TDE for a...reason
