Kendrick and Joey are also different though because Kendrick still had one of the strongest fanbases in rap before the beef even happened, he was selling out arenas for a therapy album. People underestimate how well he was doing because there’s unrealistic expectation put on Kendrick out of envy for his past accolades and success.

Joey didnt have that level of relevance or that type of fanbase. So for him, taking a long hiatus and coming back was a much riskier choice for him.

In hindsight, we recognize that but at the time, people were befuddled because he had came back with Family Ties, just to drop an emotionally intense album that sacrificed part of it general assessability for its concept.

We now realize though that Kendrick was playing the long game, and him releasing that album before going on his insane run helped his public perception with removing that “messiah” label (Drake tried that angle but nobody bought it aside from his Stan’s)
