Sony / Microsoft / Nintendo decided they can no longer sell their consoles at a lost, must make a profit off them. And never decrease price over time

"Microsoft's keeping those details close to the chest, though! TBH, the production cost doesn't matter much; it's all about the games, baby! Microsoft doesn't officially share the exact cost, but it's estimated to be around $500 to $550 per unit due to its high-end components."

"Microsoft sells each Xbox One for $499 after spending $471 to build it, according to a peek inside Microsoft's new gaming console by research firm IHS, as shared with AllThingsD. The cost to build an Xbox One is $90 more than the $381 Sony spends on its PlayStation 4, which costs consumers $399."

    wrong again ?

because Sony is really hurting for money right now with the record PS5 sales y'all spent all year bragging about

It’s not about “hurting for money” the value of the USD has literally decreased, thereby making everything cost more “dollars” for the same value.

A 2 bed apt in Atlanta in ps4 era was like $800-900

Now it’s $1200-$1500 or more. People aren’t just charging more for things because they are greedy lol the USD is literally worth less. $699 is only $397.41 in early 2000s money

its most of it. If you launch this next fall with an actual game launching with it and lower price point or with disc drive , backwards compatibility controller refresh you have an argument

there is no argument with astrobot being your biggest first party release of the year and a 700$ console

They are a corporation that’s main objective is to be profitable why would they not do what’s necessary to carry out that objective

    eurogamer.net/sony-expects-to-recoup-playstation-4-hardware-loss-at-launch

PlayStation 4 hardware will make a loss at launch, but Sony expects to immediately recoup the costs when a typical user also buys a PlayStation Plus subscription and games.

Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito made the comment to Eurogamer today in an interview at the company's Tokyo headquarters.
Eurogamer has heard from well-placed sources that Sony expects to make an approximate $60 loss per $399 unit sold. When presented with the figure, Ito denied it - but only because the company expects a typical user to buy a console with these other items.

Ito would not be drawn on whether more than one launch title would need to be bought before the whole equation resulted in Sony making money, just that the company expected to turn a profit on an average user's initial purchase.

The purchase of one launch title and a Plus subscription would indeed total close to, if not more than, the $60 mark.

you are referring to the console that choose to avoid being backwards compatible forcing gamers to not have access to their ps3, 2 or 1 games? forcing them to buy them on a digital marketplace then once building a library not wanting to leave because its not transferrable

oh no they took a 50$ loss per console thats so tough . I feel terrible for the great value they gave gamers

That must have really hurt them

I agree they been light on first party games THIS year but their library as a whole is impressive imo especially since we only half way through the generation

If they don’t do the rumored Showcase and announce some new first party 2025 titles I might be worried but I’m willing to bet the showcase rumors are true. Also third party may as well be first party this gen because Sonys third party exclusives can’t run on Xbox or Switch anyway. FF16 was supposedly a timed exclusive and still ain’t make its way to Xbox yet. It’s been “teased” but that’s about it. Only real place you can play Sonys 3rd party exclusives other than PlayStation is PC and there is still a HUGE segment of the market that just prefers to game on console.
