while we having shawn cee discourse, what do we think of this?
Damn he’d hate autobiographies and memoirs
This take is undercooked. Mainstream hip hop used to be great and the genre reached heights it never would have creatively if it stayed as a niche genre. So its not a matter of mainstream hip hop being the problem.
While i agree with his idea in the consumers being lazy, mainstream hip hop dying isn't going to magically change that. Lazy consumers will just stop searching for new rappers to listen and just stay with what they know.
But I also disagree with some of ya takes on how we need this savior figure to continue where Jay/Ye/Big 3 left off at, thats not going to happen, not because no is capable of it, but because they dont have the budget/machine for it.
Pretty bad example
Have you ever read Annie Ernaux or Joanna Pocock
They do what Drake do just for people with attention spans

Always thought this critque was stupid and pretty anti rap. You can tell his overall dislike of drake fuel this lol

Not that I’ve read their writing but providing literary context to those relationships is clearly something that Away From Home doesn’t have lol

There isn’t literary context; they just be mentioning random people in a tangent to never be brought up again. Very common in memoir and autofiction writing. The only consistent character is time
Edit: tbh if I knew them personally yeah I’d know who these people are Same as journal writing. But same can be said for Drake

Mainstream hip hop as we know it is dead not for talent reasons per se but because the process by which artists are found no longer gives special attention to good ones. In that sense I think it would be better if mainstream hip hop was "dead" because the barrier to entry wouldn't be algorithms, at least to the same extent.
We're all better off if rappers aren't trend chasing. The top tier of the rap game was more organically good back in the day because there were long term incentives for standing out. Now, not so much. So I kind of agree with his take.

Good convo from this is jow autofic/memoir/travel writing is much closer to Rap than we think
I feel like the former underground now known as ug scene (osamason, che, nettspend etc) is very popular now and imo that sound has become pretty stale with the heavy ass 808s and what not, like ik thats not the totality of hip hop currently but it feels like its the most popular sound and it also feels like that sound has run its course

I’ll think of this
I commented this in my thread but somebody commented on my video about this “Shawn a hood nigga, that’s why he think this” is such a funny outlook on this Convo
Shawn cee yns beef
Shawn cee is over party
Nigga playlist probably garbage
Prolly got 15 curated playlist with obscure artist but when Spotify wrapped comes up his most listened to is Drake

It's hilarious. Whether or not I agree with the take, his delivery of it is funny.
I can picture Drake stans crossing their arms and saying "actually..." when Shawn is just tryna get a joke off

Why would the barrier of entry be different if mainstream hip hop dies ?
And how does mainstream hip hop dying incentivize people to be more innovative in terms of their artistry? Even underground rappers chase trends in their niche (see the thousand earl clones).
Yes yes everyone go to your niche and only like artists that you know and do not discuss art with anyone.

Damn I just caught a stray
I don't think he's wrong at all
Isn’t underground rap a bunch of closeted gay guys either mumbling or screaming over bad techno beats? Why tf would I want to listen to that?

I remember when underground meant just not super famous
That genre you speak of is just a subset of rap, its not the entire "underground" in the sense of music that is not super popular
i don’t see anything wrong with what he said but people are cooking him for this take for some reason

I agree and also vaguely remember like 2008 and a lot of the guys coming out of the underground being great.
But it seems like now when someone tells me I should be listening to “underground” music they’re talking about the guys I described in my last post.
