Pope condemns killing of Russian journalist

Pope Francis has denounced the killing of Russian journalist Darya Dugina, who died in a car bombing last Saturday. The head of the Catholic Church described Dugina as one of the many “innocents” who have suffered because of the conflict in Ukraine.

On Wednesday, Italy’s Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata media outlet reported that the Pope had prayed for Ukraine and for “so many innocents who are paying for the madness, the madness of all sides.” The pope has been quoted as proclaiming that “war is madness.”

According to the article, Pope Francis went on to refer to the murder of Darya Dugina, saying he thought “of the poor girl who was blown up by a bomb that was under the car seat in Moscow.”

“The innocent pay for the war,” he concluded.

French President Emmanuel Macron warned Wednesday that France faced "sacrifices" in a new era marked by climate change and instability caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine that signalled "the end of abundance".

…"I believe that we are in the process of living through a tipping point or great upheaval. Firstly because we are living through… the end of what could seem like the end of abundance," he said.

The speech appeared designed to prepare the country for what promises to be a difficult winter ahead, with energy prices rising sharply and many families struggling with inflation.

…Macron had vowed on Tuesday that European support for Ukraine would continue "for the long term" despite the cost and impact on incomes.

"Our system based on freedom in which we have become used to living, sometimes when we need to defend it, it can entail making sacrifices," Macron told ministers on Wednesday, reprising comments he made on August 19 during his holiday.

Macron had called on French people to "accept paying the price of liberty" during an address in the south of France.

…French inflation was clocked at 6.1 percent last month, one of the lowest rates in Europe thanks to government price caps on electricity and gas, as well as tax cuts on petrol and diesel.

But trade unions are pushing for major wage increases and have called for a day of strikes and rallies on September 29.
The head of the hard-left CGT union, Philippe Martinez, told BFM television that the president's speech was "inappropriate", adding that the poorest were already paying the price of the war and that further sacrifices could not be expected.

"He'll ask for them (sacrifices) and we will oppose them," Martinez said.

let's be honest no one here actually cares about democracy as a principal/concept, just what it allows

there's a ban on certain parties running in ukraine right now so there's clearly not open democracy, there's just democracy in the sense of liberal parties w/ agreeable values running which is why you support it

and most people s***ting on ukraine for being anti-democratic don't care about democracy they just are angry their favored parties (the banned ones) aren't winning

let's stop obfuscating values behind procedures we don't actually care about

The banned parties were all fifth columns aiding a literal invader, you can't judge a war footed government by peace time standards

I agree it was clearly just a targeted point but my point was it doesn't even make sense as a point to argue when neither side actually cares about democracy as much as they do resultant values from such

Nah that's different, I'd never support that, but importantly supporting ukraine does not equate to supporting zelensky or his party

The great thing about an independent and sovereign ukraine is that they can vote for someone else if they don't like this
