The west WILL respond if China attacks Taiwan. Many countries support taiwanese independence ON THE LOW, just as the taiwanese themselves do. The only reason for that is to not get in to conflict with China and keep the status quo there is now. This is the official american point of view when it comes to Taiwan:
"Whenever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan."
Taiwan is without a doubt the largest producer of advanced semi-conductors. Adanced semi-conductors is pretty much the oil of the 21st century. They make the world go round. The West have a lot more to lose finacially when it comes to Taiwan. Add to that it would also be the first time since WWII where a full-fledged democracy would be attacked. Taiwan currently ranks as the world's eighth most democratic country and is a top 20 economy.
