Idk. I’ve always thought that the “decline” was always in the way streams were being calculated into sales. They’ve toyed with it virtually every year since scorpion dropped at some level and he’s never been one to bundle his albums. But all of his music has stood the test of time in terms of chart positions, etc. To me, thats the clear indicator that he’s not actually declining.

I mean, if any album fits the bill for the playlist narrative more than anything it’s more life. Poor sequencing, strange transitions (except for 4422 into gyalchester), etc.

You use charts as an indicator of quality of an artists albums?

Not directly. But indirectly, yes. If I think an album is quality and it’s spent literal years charting then it’s going to be a talking point. Not the main talking point, but definitely a point to be used to strengthen my argument.

There’s a lot of nuance to this question.. much bigger discussion to flesh out the reasons as to why, but, in general, yes.

You listen to an album like Scorpion and hear the same level of quality, attention to detail, and care put into it as an album like Nothing Was the Same?

i mean sss4u came out an entire calendar year before DBD and is still selling more than it so this just wouldnt make sense

we have to stop picking and choosing when to use sales and billboards to back the facts. at the end of the day the only metric we can use other than "whats hot in the streets"

Neither of these albums came and went, you’re just judging them by the same standard that you’re judging an artist that can literally fill up stadiums
