Almost forgot how much of an homunculus you turn into when this topic comes up
Yeah cause I think it’s reactionary and gross, but modern media illiteracy combined with convenient “progressive” framing allows people to spew it without noticing. If anything is problematic it’s the implications of what ought to be done in response to art that doesn’t perfectly align with your sense of how the world ought to be reflected. It’s one of those topics that genuinely makes me angry.
Let's ask @Einfinet since @HeyFella thinks he was so right about media literacy these days
You want to start a silly debate between me and them—which I’m really not interesting in indulging.

When did i say anything should be done? I love alotta DePalma but I'll never look at him the same after that movie is all I'm saying

I never said you implied anything. I said the conversation itself inevitably leads to that implication.

I'm genuinely curious and expect to observe a good discussion

They’re very intelligent from my previous interactions with them, but their take on Licorice Pizza and their agreement with you on Dressed To Kill leads me to believe the discussion will not be very healthy and ultimately lead to a dead end.

I was just glad someone that feels the same way as you about art agreed with me on DTK and surprised youre shying away from a chance to discuss it at length with someone
elric and the licorice pizza allegations?

Weirdest thing to me was that I was like the most undecided person on that ending. Everybody else wrote essays about why it's not endorsing pedophilia and i was just kinda like
"idk I don't think so" but Twitch decided to hone in on just me
probably cause of the avi I guess

i only really knew what happened superficially, since i wasn't in the thread and I still haven't seen the film
all I know is that somebody bringing up LP in a thread with you in ends very badly
s*** derails like train in a western
TCM used to have a series of curated films under the banner of “reframed” which it came with nothing.
also yeah the freddy avi doesn't do you any favors @Elric
that's a bona fide judgmental restin' b**** face
Art can’t be problematic
The word ‘problematic’ is kind of tangled up with this empty liberal performative finger pointing but I’ll keep using it for the sake of the thread
Would a film be ‘problematic’ if the creators were unequivocally hateful in their bigotry (be it homophobia/racism etc) and those ideas were so prevalent & baked into the films DNA? The plot/the morals/the meaning etc all propagating homophobia or racism?
Or does it become art - a separate thing, divorced from context and intention - as soon as it becomes a film on its own?
Don’t really have a direct example but I’m curious. There are old school awful racist, anti-black cartoons but chalking those up to merely ‘problematic’ is putting it too lightly

I just flat out reject the framing of the entire conversation. To me it’s as stupid as asking to debate what a woman is. Someone’s sense of self is all that matters to me. What “it” is doesn’t matter and ought not be debated. Morally breaking down something as beautiful and liberating as art will never be something I find worth in.

nah I mean cause he figured I was the biggest PTA stan. I've had this avi since The Master came out and I never planned in changing it but
has me on the fence. Especially with a musical sequel with Gaga on the way.

As not to contradict my last post—I’ll simply say I agree more with the latter argument.
