If you’ve played D/P before and can remember it then skip it. It’s pretty much a port. Sword has great music, new Pokémon, an addictive gameplay loop with the wild area, and a pretty robust online ranked battle system that D/P remakes don’t have. You do need to get the DLC though to see the game at its best ($30) but it’s more than worth it. They’re not perfect games but there’s a lot to enjoy and get you up to speed with especially for a returning player like you.

can learn Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Fire Fang and Earthquake. Seriously, this one is too OP of an asset for the battles, pretty much everything is covered.

There are some "tank" defence pokemons with annoying held items that you need to inflict damage until it is low and then sweep with special attacks for the last blow.

you probably are required to have Flying, Ground, Thunder, Water in your team.

What’s a good fire type option? This houndoom isn’t cutting it

ponyta/rapidash is an option, or teach flamethrower to a non fire type.

Just get a stunktank and teach it flamethrower.
