This isn’t anything like what Chapelle did, what the f*** do you mean? Chapelle was making jokes at the expense of trans people, then got in his feelings when people (rightfully) criticized him for it, and it’s not even like they were original jokes to begin with.

Like, I feel like people are being intentionally obtuse and refuse to properly navigate the subject matter of the track, or consider what the intent of it is.

    You’re literally proving my point

By “them” are you referring to white liberals or the trans community?

Because I don’t really give that much of a s*** about the former (even though the writer of this review is black).

This is actually a big W for Kendrick cause if you heard the album you’ll know it’s exactly what he wanted. He finally got the critics off his nuts and can probably make more music with a lot less pressure now.

Why are people who are saying “Kendrick ‘L’amar” ignoring the fact that this is still one of the best reviewed albums of the decade?

My friend said he should have got the trans relatives to rap on the song. And also said “cis people shouldn’t tell trans people stories”

    That's insane.

He got Kanye’d for being a #freethinker by Condé Nast huh

The same Condé Nast that just dubbed Future the best rapper alive gives Kendrick a 7.6 because of… his “blemishes of negation” huh

I personally can’t believe they give scores out based on the views of the artist

    It’s mind boggling to me

And they hold guys like Kendrick and Kanye to a much higher standard than the guys they’ll give out 7.5-8.0s to once a week

For sure but still gotta wait for Variety, rolling stone, ny and la times etc. Pitchfork reviews seem to hold a lot of weight too so once this one really gets updated we’ll see the number change. Think the end result might end up being around 88

It’s the other side of the coin: being lauded because of who you are (leading a movement they agree with).

Actually, Fantano is the one thing that goes against what you’re saying

Hate him or love him he does actually speak on the music

Why people care so much about reviews and critics?

If you enjoyed the album, that’s all that matters

People keep asking this so I’ll quote myself from another thread:

“ Because it’s a part of American music culture
Critical acclaim or lack there of from reputable music publications have always been a part of an albums legacy. Just as much as sales, awards, good/bad press. It’s apart of the machine that makes the music industry what it is.
I think this is lost on gen z listeners who grew up in the streaming era.

A decade or two ago having your album show up in the actual Rolling Stone magazine or on Pitchfork with a 5 star review was a big f***ing deal and it meant a lot to consumers who often relied on these publications to know what was going on in music. It sounds so antiquated now because today everyone has all knowledge available to the human race at their fingertips but things really used to be that way for most of music history.

A lot of people still rely on critics to keep pace with who is making worth while music and who you can skip
There is A LOT of music released all the time and the average person doesn’t have time to go through it all. Which presents another point. The average person is usually biased and has narrow taste that revolves around the music they have time to consume. Critics on the other hand SHOULD be unbiased, objective, and should generally listen to way more music than the average person since they do that for a living”

There’s your answer. For some people it’s bigger than their own personal taste. People like to feel like they are apart of something at the end of the day. If you can’t respect it then critic review threads just ain’t for you.

Just gonna add this in here, the writer of the review is Black and his reviews are predominantly hip-hop music.
