    Look, I get it. Not everyone is going to agree with my take, and that’s part of the job. When I review an album, I’m not writing to confirm your bias or cater to fandoms—I’m giving you my honest perspective, backed by years of listening to and studying music. That’s the gig.

    Kendrick is undeniably one of the most important artists of our time, but not everything he drops is above critique. GNX is ambitious, no doubt, but ambition doesn’t automatically equal greatness. My review wasn’t about tearing him down; it was about engaging with the music critically. If that didn’t line up with your feelings about the album, cool—we’re allowed to disagree.

    But let’s be real: the energy some of y’all bring to these threads makes it clear you don’t want reviews; you want validation. That’s not what I’m here for. Let the music speak for itself, and if you think I’m off the mark, fine—but at least try to engage with the points instead of coming with pitchforks. Respectfully.

    i hear u and all that but nigga have u ever had cap n crunch and proceeded to pour water in it ???

    Pitchfork = Alphonse Pierre

    One corny ass dude’s opinion doesn’t matter lol. He’s known for doing this s*** and he’s single handedly responsible for destroying the credibility of pitchfork with unfair out of touch rap reviews

    Still universally acclaimed with a solid 84 on Metacritic

    Funny that they gave GNX a 6.6 and DAMN a 9.2 when GNX has a lot in common with DAMN, imo

    I mean a 6.6 ain’t even bad in terms of comparing it to his whole discography & potential as an artist which is what these ratings are

    There's plenty of a***ysis of the music and the background is generally relevant or useful context given what preceded this album. I don't think it's necessarily unfair to tie kendrick leaning into the west coast stuff to the beef either, whether you want to see that as a pejorative or observation is down to personal preference I guess.

    As I said, I think it's pretty obvious that Alphonse is not a particularly big kendrick fan and I would assume he finds him self important or something. His articles in the past would lead me to believe he likes more street rap style stuff with pronounced regional elements - you would think he likes this more as a result but tbf he says he wishes the features got more prominence. He clearly also sees drake as a sort of larger than life figure in the genre and doesn't really take him all that seriously which leads to him not really slamming his musical output, for better or worse. So yeah, I would take his particular views on kendricks work with a little bit of salt but I think it's ridiculous for ppl to get majorly offended by this too: I think it makes for interesting food for thought and god forbid somebody doesn't think every kendrick albums a 10/10!

    that last sentence is so condescending and disingenous that it somehow negates everything that you wrote preceding it. believe it or not, most kendrick fans don't think that this is a perfect album and are fine with criticism. if the criticism provided isn't up to the perceived standard of the publication that it was posted on, then people are allowed to criticize that. just like kendrick, critics aren't infallible and people should be allowed to call them out.

    Y'all keep doing the goofy ass "god forbid someone doesn't like the album!" s*** thinking y'all saying something, when most people itt who liked the album don't mind that he didn't like it. They're saying it's a hating ass review that barely covers the actual music itself. Or it's flat out projection and assumptions.

    That's just not a good review man lol

  • Nov 26, 2024

    Forreal though idk why people take Pitchfork seriously nowadays, they give most rap albums a score in the 6 to 7 range by default.

    this is less pitchfork being on a payroll and more them knowing a negative review from them would stand out more in a sea of positive ones

    and to give them credit, it works

    (i'd just ignore it)

    Ngl listened to the Kendrick album once and haven’t replayed. Same with Mr Morale. Kendrick is at the level that when you play his album it should make you want to relisten immediately like GKMC and DAMN. While he is obviously one of the most talented writers and artists of all time, his music just isn’t hitting me the same as it used to.
