“I doubt whatever PTA told them took them from lackluster to amazing”

This is just an asinine and stupid comment that doesn’t understand the collaborative process of filmmaking. They’re working together to find truth but the they did not know what they were doing at moments…………..bevause they had literally never done it

Cooper Haim and PTA spent months (just like the coen pair n denzel, just like the lead actresses of passing and Rachel hall, etc etc etc) together working on how to get their chemistry right

Of course they were cast because they have talent….. cast by the director ! Pta met with other actors and actresses before landing on them

Hate on PTA all you want I don’t care. Hate on this movie all you want it’s your right. My beef is you dismissing what a director does. it is nonsensical to praise two first time lead actors for their performance while avoiding the work PTA did to get the actors to those moments of truth

Paul very famously gets the best performances out of his actors for his whole career when the f*** else was Wahlberg interesting or Cruise that crazy Sandler that deep etc etc etc nobody crafts roles for actors like this except for maybe Mike Leigh who has his own unique process for it.

Punch drunk love is goated by filmmakers and film lovers and regular folks

Sandler called PTA to ask about the Safdies before uncut gems too

Yeah I’m be off this don’t understand what you are saying. How can they be in the industry already if they’ve never acted before? What? The film and music industry are both entertainment but completely different working environments and preparation

Just because Cooper visited his dads set doesn’t mean he knows how to give a good performance after 10 takes

What I mean is nepotism and relationships got them those roles not their acting abilities. He gave them the scripts with their names on it before they even knew it existed. I’m confident anyone else could’ve gave those same performances and people would still praise PTA for “getting such a performance out of them” when in reality it’s not like they’re playing some sort of Pacino or DDL esque role where the script is pretty much an afterthought to their abilities, anyone could’ve read for this and it would’ve made sense due to the mundane nature of the movie but he wrote this specifically for them, it’s not a shock that he would work so hard to help them out if he’s the one casting.

Now I ask, do you think he would put that time into writing this if he didn’t think they could pull it off? This is just a self-indulgent passion project that Hollywood is gonna blindly fund and people think they have to like due to the person behind it.

"since it’s PTA people give him a little more credit than warranted which is my whole point from the beginning."

imo this is absolutely what's happening with this film.

the film literally ends with a 25 year old woman being romantically involved with a 15 year old boy. it irked me so much that the movie plays it in such a quirky and romanticized way.

i'm surprised more people are not addressing this elephant in the room.

And that’s exactly what I mean, these people have his d*** so far down their throats that they fail to realize they’re just proving my point. They see me criticizing the poor screenwriting and how boring/self-indulgent this movie is and just change topic to say but man look at how he got them to act. Well no s***, he’s a good director but this isn’t a good movie.

His last 3 movies all suffer from the same issues and if his last 3 movies were some new directors first 3 movies they would be received extremely differently is all I’m saying.

Mike Leigh is legit one of the greatest British directors of all time, and possible the best currently living.

I think every film he’s ever made has gotten 4 stars from Ebert.

I prefer The Archers, David Lean, and Laurence Olivier the best from the Isle of Britannia. Plus Hitchcock too.
