The fact that movie hipsters love him and he can do no wrong by them combined with the actors performances is what saves him and his scripts from being called mid but that’s what it is

Have someone else write/direct this script and shop it around Hollywood and I guarantee it wouldn’t get picked up and if it did no praise or award nominations but no one wants to hear the truth

Best way to explain it is that a movie that has a clear narrative and theme kind of gets old when you've watched it once or twice but something about films like this rewards infinite rewatches and just the way he puts the whole thing together feels amazing whether or not you're satisfied with the conclusion. You definitely do not have the right of humor to appreciate these films either.

Nigga early PTA just ripped off Altman and Scorcese and everyone ate it all up, are those movies bad? No. Actually some of the best of that decade, but this movie and every one he’s made post 2010 is imo. Now is it a coincidence that once he stopped wearing his influences on his sleeve the quality of his worked declined? I don’t think so. He just found a way to make mainstream movies that pander to arthouse nerds due to the lack of a conventional storyline and cinematography and acting taking center stage.

So yeah, if being a pretentious sheep who likes certain movies to place yourself in an imaginary hierarchy when talking about art is what it means to understand art then s*** I guess you’re right I don’t understand art and have no interest in doing so.

It doesn’t pull too much from other films since is was adapted from a book but if you haven’t watched Short Cuts or The Color of Money you should cause Magnolia and Hard Eight blatantly pull a lot from those movies. Also goes with out saying Goodfellas and Boogie Nights have tons of similarities but I’m sure you know about that comparison.

Finally saw this. Enjoyed the first half, kinda stopped paying attention and didn’t know wtf was happening the second half oh well

Master and Phantom Thread had a good plot tho imo, this is just random side plots thrown in after each other.

Ppl really take that big of an issue with some old white guy in the 70’s mimicking an Asian accent. I expected there to be way worse s*** in this from the backlash I heard.

If you think the movie is bad that’s cool. Not in my top 5 of ‘21 but enjoyed it a lot.

Of course unknown directors can’t get the same budget for a period piece with unknown actors as the leads. Not to mention PTA being the writer/cinematographer and basically the co-casting director too. Earn that leeway with track record

Plenty of period pieces with star actors & actresses get greenlit from 5 to 50m in budget.

a directors primary job is to shape performance….. how are the actors who never did film or theater supposed to save someone whose been directing longer than they’ve been alive . He worked with her to ensure she gave a good performance …. She is magnetic but that element of her had to be brought out with work with pta and the other first time actor pta casted. Just because coopers dad is the truth does not mean he was going to give a good performance

That takes months of work not everyone can just sit in that chair

See I would agree if I didn’t see the actors in his movies give great performances in other movies as well, not like he’s the only one that can get good performances out of people

We gotta remember the actors can do the job, that’s why they were chosen. I doubt whatever PTA told them took them from lackluster to amazing cause if they were lackluster at any point they wouldn’t of gotten the job in the first place.

Safdies work with first time actors almost exclusively and I don’t hear that praise go to them it usually goes to the actors and tbh I think they deserve that credit way more cause they’ll have scenes where most people on screen have never acted before but they’re believable and holding their own in a scene with an established vet. We’re not talking about people in the industry already who never acted, we’re talking people casted off the street, now that’s impressive.

Now I don’t say that to take away from PTAs importance in all of this but would we even be a***yzing it that much if this same exact movie was made by anyone else? I don’t think so. People would just praise the acting and move on but since it’s PTA people give him a little more credit than warranted which is my whole point from the beginning.

imo this is absolutely what's happening with this film.

the film literally ends with a 25 year old woman being romantically involved with a 15 year old boy. it irked me so much that the movie plays it in such a quirky and romanticized way.

i'm surprised more people are not addressing this elephant in the room.

This is just an asinine and stupid comment that doesn’t understand the collaborative process of filmmaking. They’re working together to find truth but the they did not know what they were doing at moments…………..bevause they had literally never done it

Cooper Haim and PTA spent months (just like the coen pair n denzel, just like the lead actresses of passing and Rachel hall, etc etc etc) together working on how to get their chemistry right

Of course they were cast because they have talent….. cast by the director ! Pta met with other actors and actresses before landing on them
