Revising their strategy
Revising their strategy
Lol people think they will go back to disc . When I first heard it I was like "oh only first party titles will be digital only so they can get more money but they will still allow third party the option to make disc if they so choose. Then realized
The cost of a disc drive doesnt justify this. They could easily put a disc drive in and say "we arent making games on disc or they will be limited quantities compared to normal preorder only not on store shelves or order directly from us only ". Instead they say no disc drive and just dont even give third party the option to make physicals even if it risk multiple disc. Feels like they realized they cant upgrade formats again properly and just called it.
While the xbox news was bad it wasnt quite as terribly evil as closing multiple studios and shutting down games in progress

Not a bad idea
Not a bad idea
I mean the reason they arent going with that idea because it would make them look bad and greedy. They cant say "production cost and our gamers mainly buy digital " when what they are asking for should be a decision with third party devs too. Kojima sad as f*** no more physical games. They could basically use the same format as PS5 on PS6 it seems but maybe to them this solves any fear of jailbreaking, piracy and region locking
Their listed reasons for doing this dont logically align with nobody being able to make disc. Nor does it align with okay the cost of disc drives isnt going up so why eliminate it all together even a disc drive that plays ps4, ps5 disc. When realistically a high cost console the easiest way to sell it would be like Xbox saying you can put any or a high number of ps1, 2, 3,4,5 disc in it and they just work or automatically upgrade framerate. If you want to be more like PC then be more like PC.
I really do wonder what they are going to post next
Sony is funny

I could've sworn you were replying to people hating on Sony for this and said physical doesn't make sense because games are getting bigger and would have to be on multiple discs
Sony is funny
https://twitter.com/PlayStation/status/2074478664805212593lol yall got to realize all the comments in the world dont matter especially after they see their record preorders of GTA VI digital

Y'all lack a level of nuance because as you see this post is a paragraph and my post when this first broke is a paragraph. So when you summarize my post later its always a little off.
I said from beginning I thought this was inevitable. There are some games that can fit on multiple disc and I think still run well . There are others like GTA VI where I don't know if you make it 5 disc does it run the same does it just go based on the chapter system . Is the world too large to do that on some open world games. I dont know. I do know that in many cases the game installs and the disc doesnt actually spin that often
I was essentially saying research and development I was hoping they would create a larger sized format that can fit the game on the disc. Because the issue of getting a disc but needing to download content or a patch for the game to be fully playable to me defeats some of the purpose. Developers have gotten too comfortable with going Gold meaning less and the launch version of the game not being truly playable
I wanted to get GTA VI physical and was going to buy it even with no current console. I think Physical itself is dope but I think what is on the disc itself keeps going down. So I am not shocked by Sonys shift to digital only
Also sony data they are releasing about physical vs digital sales isnt entirely accurate. We know astrobot physicals sold like crazy in UK. As did games like spider man 2 we know from leaks.
I have said if you want physical games then buy them. I bought spider man 2 physical and gave it to a friend. I like physicals .
Either way though I have told people this isnt the end of gaming
Me saying a company that doesnt even aim to be backwards compatible and keeps doing remakes and remasters isnt shocking they go digital only. Because they stand to make more money isnt shocking to me. Isnt supporting it. While at the same time I said if the disc count gets up high enough on certain games I dont know how that affects performance.
I am seeing it doesnt actually affect performance because they could install disc by disc would just take a while on larger games like 300GB potentially. Then the disc of where they are at the time in the game is the key. If it doesnt hurt performance I dont really think there is a viable excuse besides wanting to eliminate used game sales, risk of jailbreaking and get most sales directly from them. All of which I have said in thread.
While third party has done multiple disc with ease. I think sony not huge on doing multiple disc and is trying to save money and instead of saying "third party can still make disc but we are done" is saying no disc. GTA VI not being on disc at all and being the one to break that news rather than Sony game being the first do it helps them too

yeah spider man 2, tlou2, returnal, the quarry, days gone, death stranding 1, recent yakuza, are all on ps extra

hew wants to own it lol
He mentions disc throughout his entire post and you mentioned he could save money by having it on a subscription service
hew wants to own it lol
Yh but idk if he's aware alot of these are available in a cheaper way if he wants to play them... I wouldn't have known if I was new to playstation

everyone always says the great thing about owning it is you can sell it and make some money back. The key part is that you’re saving money that way. So with catalogue, you can play like $400 of games for a month of ps extra which is $15 or something (less if you get it on sale) that’s better savings than if you bought and sold the entire collection and got most of your money back

I did see the "extra" s*** a lot, and that's pretty crazy that all those games are on there, but I don't like feeling like I have to keep a subscription up to play a game. Also the fact that "ps classics" was the highest tier just kinda rubbed me the wrong way, don't really feel like supporting that. I'm sure that I'm gonna cancel PC game pass and swap over to this eventually tho, the library is kino. Sony also just put a battery in my back to own the games too, I think the most expensive one was spider man 2 at 35 so everything was dirt cheap, id rather just own it. I'm coming from years of PC only, feels good to have physicals again

I mean there is more to owning a game than selling it. S*** when I was a kid I had to sell it to buy new games because I didnt have a job but once you get a job you see Gamestop is scamming you. You own to own it to have it forever. To give to friends and family. To build a collection. I get you personally not wanting physical wholeheartedly. I am on PC currently and obviously will have less physicals but when I am on a console I get physicals all the time. To each their own but thats part of the soul of a console to me. Gamepass is cool but there is such a thing as having access to too many games to me vs owning them

Yeah its the soul of consoles to me . Same as when I phase out apple music. I like to over time build a music catalog that I own or download so even if everything goes down I got my own s***.

Big on the "too much access" to games too. I get big decision paralysis on PC sometimes, from 1. Having a huge backlog/library over time that's beyond easy to install/delete and 2. All the subscriptions plus whatever you can emulate is just way too many games and I'm interested in so many of them.
Thing is too, I'll never sell a physical, especially to GameStop, ever again. I've regretted it since middle school when my dad let me do it to "teach me a lesson" even tho we're both gameheads, so my game collection was neutered from young, never doin that again. I came across a sealed Japanese copy of JSRF (top 5 game ever for me) and I'll never even touch it let alone sell it. I'll frame that s*** before anything, physicals are kino

If I had known what I know now I would have only sold to Game Crazy or Gamestop what I got extra of. There was a blockbuster flip to get new games at a point in time. also when blockbuster and game crazy closed they had crazy game sales. S*** if there is physical of Gen Atlas collectors edition I will be getting it and I dont even own a console right now. If there was a physical for GTA VI I intended to get two copies lol and again currently no console

Yeah nah f*** GameStop, at least in terms of selling games to them, once I realized they gave you single digit dollars for a lot of games, I quit that s***. I'll buy a pre-owned game in a heartbeat tho, f*** it why not

I get some people grew out of physical entirely. I am not mad at them to each their own but to me a console itself part of the point is the option of having a physical. If I dont have the option to have physical then its not personally for me
