they've done Prince justice overall. besides Welcome 2 America, i've loved all the archival material and the remasters have been nothing but amazing. there's some questionable decisions like excluding certain tracks from a SDE, stupid remixes of vault tracks...but other than that i'm happy
The “Originals” set is an utter mess; at least, though, “Love… Thy Will Be Done” hadn’t been touched.
that's all we can hope for
There's actually a lot of good material and a large amount of it being unheard from 83 that could be on a PR SDE and would make a good set
The estate will hold until the 2024 imo but I'm looking forward to them including the doves demo, all of the kiowa home demos and warehouse recordings
Hit or Miss, great at putting together boxsets and including the right stuff with the outtakes and footage. EXTREMELY bad at giving the information about the songs on the boxsets though, complete lies lots of the time and even worse when we have leaks and bootlegs of demos and then they release and they've edited 2-3 different version to make a "new mix" and then they'll claim it is the original
The 1999 boxset is the only release that had no frankenstein'd or edited songs on there, SOTT had 2 I believe, originals is 90% remixed and the PR re-release had 1 edit on there
SotT had one edited song ‘only,’ thankfully, but yeah.

i'll say this...i think it's a great comp for casuals who probably weren't aware that Prince wrote a lot of material for other artists and his own side-projects. other than that, yeah it's sketchy
still can't get over them editing s***shooter and just trimming it down when the full mix would've fit on all CDs, vinyl and streaming

Or over what they’d done to “Baby, You’re a Trip”; “Dear Michaelangelo”; “Holly Rock”; “Manic Monday”; or “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Nothing Compares 2 U and Manic Monday are the worst ones because they didn't need ANYTHING down to them they're completely finished songs with all prince overdubs on them, why did anyone think they needed to splice Susannah and Brenda over the tracks
and because the solo Prince mixes aren't MUCH different those damn label heads won't see them as needing to be on a boxset
Can't wait for them to release a Doves demo and just stem edit the s*** out of the session and claim it's the original Prince mix before he removed the layers

such weird editing choices man
We Can F*** is still the absolute best release of everything from any boxset/release just an absolutely impeccable track from top to bottom. IF Bold Gen wasn't as damaged and worn down it'd be up there too
i think the Manic Monday edit is the worst tbh
Would've rather they released the actual Apollonia mix of it if that was the case.
Edit: Who's idea was it to even use backing vocals as the lead vocals and then splice the harmonies from a completely different take
Remember what they’d done to “Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden,” though?
we dont talk about that
Remember what they’d done to “Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden,” though?
I had to run it back when it released and check what I just heard, thought it was one of my fan mixes
Out of the FIFTEEN included tunes on the “Originals” project, merely FOUR of them hadn’t been edited; crazy.

No: “Jungle Love”; “Love… Thy Will Be Done”; “Make-Up”; and “Noon Rendezvous.” ;-)

Make Up is an edit? Swear it's the same as my boot of it but it has been a few years since I checked the bootleg.
Noon Rendezvous I still view as a mini edit just because they used the earlier mix of it
EDIT: Missread
“Jungle Love” isn’t an edit either; so, “Jungle Love”; “Love… Thy Will Be Done”; “Make-Up”; and “Noon Rendezvous.”

The fact we even have to discuss this is crazy especially when this was the first big release the estate put together
Well they use extremely similar chord progressions, only 1 chord difference, both are string driven and the first version of Beret is from mid 82 so it was recorded before Take Me With You. Could easily in another world where Raspberry Beret is used and Take Me With You is left to Apollonia 6 or just not recorded
i can see that, i just feel like Take Me With U has more of a punch to it, def as a follow up to Lets Go Crazy vs RB which is more softer
