this is all theoretical but I’d like to imagine a nuclear age era Nort would not think nuclear worldwide catastrophe was guaranteed

but climate change catastrophe is.. if I’m not mistaken? the UN just said we’re crossing a dangerous threshold where effects will be irreversible.

also I think the issues we’re seeing with AI now are small compared to what they will be

    idk!!

depends what u mean by catastrophe

like i see it possible that the privileged people (aka us) are still able to have a life worth living and are the ones in a good position to have children even if many people across the world will face great hardship

Do you have a fear that big tech is going to weaponize these innovations and dangle them like candy to convince a great adoption of ai that will eventually surplace the government in some capacity and diminish democracy.

its like taking this life saving and powerful tech and leveraging it to gain more power over the government.

Peter Thiel and other tech ceos have been pretty vocal about this being a goal of theres

We’ve already been there for a long time. COVID was probably the best example that we already live in a technocracy

do you think you can convince yourself of that same thing now

or like think of some compelling arguments for it

and 2nd question, even if things arent overall 'progressing' is it still worth it to have kids? like say if things were just stagnant or someting

i’m struggling to. i consider myself to be a pretty optimistic person but i’m not quite seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. what do you think? do you feel like we’re on a decline?

my undertsanding of the time period was people were pretty spooked a nuclear destruction was probable.

and climate change is pretty grim. i think the truth is we know it will adversely affect many things, kill many people and there is some runaway effect point we will cross. But the exact outcome and timeline is very hard to estimate. The nuke thing i think was scarier because it wasnt gradual and it was indiscriminate

AI definetly the nuclear arms of the modern day in pandora’s box vibes and the nuclear threat still exists, just with ai now as an added layer of risk

    i don’t know.

i hate the idea of bringing kids into a bad situation. suffering is relative and we have it better than a lot of places but yeah.

It will solve energy efficiency. If it’s good at anything, it’s math. If it doesn’t, it’s unsolvable but I don’t believe that to be true.
